You are getting me worried, but I really wanted those two magazines (I added two Nexus magazines issue missing in the collection to make the transaction more interesting and I was ready to buy some Gateways issue too - as soon as I saw shipping costs I stopped buying anything else   ). Well, let's hope for the best

Don't worry overly. T&T seem to ship on time and don't have an issue with items 'going missing in the mail' that would be higher than any other retailer. Their issues seem to be two-fold. The first issue concerns shipping costs (too high, too long to calculate, and too many items 'no longer in stock' when coincidentally the item sold cheaply of they screwed up the shipping charge). The second issue is the blatant lies in the descriptions and the over exageration of condition, something that they have been caught at many many times.

As a side issue, if you ever have to phone them and deal with their 'customer services staff', these are some of the most ignorant, rude and offensively stupid people I've ever spoken to on the planet. Maybe they breed them inhouse, or maybe they are training goblins, but these are certainly people less able to understand English than most of the Foreign call centres on the planet. It is an achievement in itself that they have managed to train these people to work a telephone, so they have to be commended for the level of care they have for their local communities less fortunate.

If you manage to get through the shipping issues without getting the polite "F'ck You! We're not selling it at that price" e-mail, and you avoid having to speak to the monkey troop, the odds are high your item will arrive well packed and in a sensible time.

The only outstanding issue is whether it is in a reasonable condition and has all it's pages, and on the whole, if you're not too fussy, it'll be fine. If it's not as described, go straight to your Credit Card and not to Customer Services. You'll get your refund from your CC campany and can ship back to T&T at your own leisure. No need to stress yourself by extending them any level of courtesy or communication. They wouldn't think twice about treating you in the same way.

This happened to me recently. My decision to place an order with T&T was based in part on a cheap listing, plus the chance to combine shipping on a couple of items. I checked the box on the (store site, non-ebay) order form to ask me in case an item is unavailable. Sure enough, the cheap item was unavailable but they shipped my order anyway.

My original order was 2 items for $30, but I was charged $25 for 1 item. If I had known, I might have cancelled the whole order. If they do this regularly, it's scam territory.

Other than that, I can see your overall point - T&T is too big to handle collectors' issues like condition or edition. Their scams resemble those of big companies, such as when my phone bill gets padded with fees, rather than the scams of a small-time criminal.

This is the crux of the issue, they sell games not collectables.  I have met and dealt directly with Jon Huston of T&T and he is far from a scam artist.  Jon is polite and knowledgeable.

While I have got lucky once with them I will never ever deal with T&T (on a collectable item) unless it is face to face. They have just to much stuff and to many employees to deal with the likes of us.   They do not go out of there way to rip anybody off (As JonB would for example) they just have had there business become to big (and successful!)

Games can get you through times of no money but money can not get you through times of no games!!

This is the problem. The guy who owns the company might be polite and knowledgable, but if he employs rude and incompetent lying assholes to front his company for him, it makes you wonder how much of a 'nice guy' he really is. Is he too far removed to know what is being done in his name? And does he really care so long as he's getting cash in his pocket?

Customers are not worth dealing with? :?
So, that (in essence) is the problem....

Some folks said Bernie Madoff was a nice guy to meet, polite, knowledgable (or so it seemed), very sociable, and perhaps even a good guy to be buds with too.
Just dont invest any money with his company. 8)

Hi,

Jon Houstons temperament is very variable.

Altho he has been unfailing polite to me, I have seen him be extremely rude to customers he considers "ordinary".

Cheers,
Malc

That'll explain his company's apparent policy of treating customers like shit, sorry, like 'ordinary people'.

Well, I bought Troll and The Gamers magazines because they had very interesting articles to read (especially the one about the end of New Infinities Productions) so 'condition' is not an issue: they were very cheap too. So far no 'out of stock' emails nor refunds  :)

I buy from Troll & Toad when an item is very low cost ($6 max), one I can live with in almost any condition, and unavailable elsewhere.  So, basically, random issues of some magazines.

That's about all I trust them with.

That's the rub - T&T is so huge that on a regular basis, they have something I think I need but cannot otherwise find.

Here is my little experience with Troll and Toad.

About shipping method and shipping cost :

My first question was : why the priority flat-rate envelope is not a method you offer ? The answer was this one : "we do not have the material for that, sorry for the inconvenience….." I'm not American so when I read that I thought it was true.
Now I'm sure like other collectors here that it's a lie and that if T&T do not want to ship with that method it's only because it's a fixed price and that  it' not easy to gain extra money with it, as it does not depend on the weight.  And the price for first class international at T&T is prohibitive. Another frequent problem is the weight for each item. One time, I tried to place an order for a AD&D module of the 80's, let's say something like 250 gr/ 0,5 pounds, the item was estimated at 4 pounds (!!) and first class was then not available ! Shipping cost was more than $30 ! It should have been 0,4 pounds and 10$.. I sent a mail to T&T and they promptly changed the weight for the good one.

About item condition
Another negative point. I purchased a SW module, labelled as "mint in shrinkwrap". The module delivered had many creases and the shrink was torn on several places, nearly entirely on the back cover. I sent a mail and I received a polite answer but no partial refund.
Worst : one time, I received a SW module directly put in a box without anything else inside.

So now I ask about the exact condition before an order and I ask for a good protection for each order, it's far from being perfect but it 's better when I ask before.

Last thing : I asked T&T to answer questions about printings they have for some AD&D modules : I got no answer and when I sent a second message then it was a negative answer, it seems that they have no time to spend for collectors who ask for specific information.

I've had similar problems with T&T over the years. Condition grading for RPG items is almost always "optimistic", let's say, and shipping is too high in a lot of cases. I also play M:tG, though, and for that T&T is great. They'll send you up to 99 cards for 99 cents 1st Class, well packaged and promptly posted. I've come to the conclusion that, even considering how many RPG items they do in fact carry, it's basically just a sideline for them, one which doesn't get enough attention and which they're not exactly expert in managing.

I started working in the RPG department 4 months ago at TnT, condition has been an uphill battle since starting due to the volume of product that we have. I'm pretty strict on grading myself and the quality control on current items going in has been much better, we also just recently regraded everything from 1st Edition, next up we are going to regrade OD&D and Basic.

The department has a new head and workers who care about giving our customers exactly what they order. A lot of the graders in the past were lax in their grading and often just didn't care enough to fully check it all the time, but that has changed and we intend to fix their mistakes. I will  say that if you have any problems with what you received contact our customer service. As for the shipping, it's not my department and I have nothing to do with it, but I do know ordering directly from the site is cheaper than the shipping is on Ebay.

Welcome and thanks for coming to the site to represent T'n'T, I hope things work out.
There was another employee here a couple of months saying similar things, that grading would improve.
Personally, I think that there has been too much damage done to the rep here to get massive amount of business, but if the grading was accurate with less 'maybe' & 'might have' BS AND the shipping to the UK etc wasnt a rip-off, you'd probably get my business! :)

Welcome to the Acaeum forums Crimsonspire!  I commend you for responding to the concerns expressed by Acaeum members about T&T.  While I haven't done a lot of business with T&T, the reputation of T&T over the years is common fodder, so I've stayed away from interest in your listings.

I hope you will continue to stay in contact with this forum as I'm sure there will be additional feedback.  I recommend you come with some thick skin as commentary can get prickly from time to time.  Still, I think you'll find plenty of criticism which you'll find to be constructive making regular visits here worthwhile.

It's good to know there is someone at T&T who is aware of our concerns, and it sounds like you are on the right track by properly re-grading everything.  I'm also glad to hear you have a new department head as whoever was department head before certainly did not oversee an optimal customer experience for some customers.

However, your comment about the shipping department did not comfort anyone here.  Improper packing and excessive shipping charges are two common criticisms discussed here, and until there is at least some additional information addressing those concerns, T&T is still......T&T.

Again, welcome to the forums, and I hope you'll get back with some updates about these additional concerns.   8)

The grading is accurate for anything going in currently, but the categories that haven't been inspected, pulled, and regraded are the problem areas. Next few months we will be pulling various lines and regrading them. And I can understand the bad rep for the conditions, being a player and collector myself it pisses me off when I find just blatant mistakes made by simple laziness of past graders.

Then I might take a punt on an item and see what happens, thanks (and good luck!)
