mbassoc2003 wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:You attribute those taking issue with your racist statements to their skin colour.
When you don't know their skin colour, but you do known they take issue with what you have posted, you say you are willing to bet they are white.
It is coming across as hatred. It is ignorant. It is racist, and it is quite distasteful.
Why do you feel the need to judge anyone based on the colour of their skin?

Friend, saying that somebody is a white male, and that that fact carries privileges, is not being racist! You are all turned around here. I am not sure what I said that you consider racist. Please give me an example.

FYI, to be racist, you have to be in the position of power, which I am not compared to other white males. Racism is always powerful to powerless. It runs only in one direction. For example, it is near impossible that a black or brown person be racist to a white person (what is colloquially referred to as a 'Oreo', notwithstanding). That is just fact. If you have been told otherwise, you were deceived.

If you found my statement about 'willing to bet' offensive, I apologize. It was not my intention. But white fragility is a fact, and the reaction pointed to that fragility. In any case, was I wrong? I am willing to apologize even further and personally if I was. Said otherwise, if I bet wrong, I am at fault. But betting does not make me racist - it makes me a realist that has studied and felt the issue of racism in the flesh.

If my words are coming across as hatred, well, there is little I can do about that. We started talking about bias in D&D. Is there? Yes. We segwayed to talk about race and gender. Is there racism and sexism in D&D? I would say yes. Does that make EGG, DA, or any player racist? I can't make that call but I invite everybody to think it through. BTW, I am a proud D&D player and certainly not racist.

Again, I am not judging anybody. I have always talked about the 'white male', not anybody in particular. I have many good friends here in the Acaeum and elsewhere, a lot of them white males! But the fact is that there is no racism without whiteness. That is undeniable fact, proven by centuries of U.S. history. If that offends, I am sorry - the truth does that, and it behooves all of us, me, you, and everyone else, to deal and make it better for those that are getting here now.

Héctor.

Please offer me a counterpoint. I am willing to learn and read.

And, thus, shallow thought is once again proven, quite sadly.

It is impossible to be racist or sexist toward a white male. Reverse racism/sexism is a lie.

Class dismissed. Read a book. Turn off the TV.

PS. Apologies to all members of this forum for my directness but silence is complicity.

Racism (per Merriam-Webster dictionary):
rac·ism | \ ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm  also -ˌshi- \
Definition of racism
1: a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
Ladino elites used racism to justify the displacement and enslavement of the indigenous population, and these beliefs, along with the resentment created by the continued exploitation of indigenous land and labor, culminated in the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996).
— Mariana Calvo

White person (per United States Census Bureau):
The U.S. Census Bureau must adhere to the 1997 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) standards on race and ethnicity which guide the Census Bureau in classifying written responses to the race question:
White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
Black or African American – A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
American Indian or Alaska Native – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.
Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.

You characterizing my capacities and behaviors based on race is racist.  Maybe you and your like-minded friends disagree, but that's of little importance.

Thank you for the definition of racism. It bears seeing. Not sure how that makes me racist, though. In the U.S., white (and male and rich and Christian) is deemed more powerful than everything else. Is this not a fact? Being so, it proves U.S. racism is white to non-white. Is this news?

Not sure what to do with the Ladino bit but, precisely: Ladino are the powerful and oppressed the non-powerful; racism, qed.

Not sure what the U.S. Census definitions add to your point.

Where did I "characterize your capacities and behavior"? Do you mean when I wrote about 'white fragility'? Offering an explanation for the last dozen posts is not being racist - again, one cannot be racist toward white men. Calling out behavior is not racist, especially if the person in question has the power in terms of race.

We are going in circles. What is lacking is information.

Héctor.

We all have biases, men/males more than most, and white males more than almost everybody else.

I think that (bold) is what is being focused on.
If it was this: We all have biases, men/males more than most - I don't see anything wrong with.

I have not known of anyone being kicked off the site. That won’t happen.
I’ve also not known people to take things personally. That also tends not to happen.
But I’d suggest you re-read what you posted.
All the obfuscation and prevarications in the world do not detract from the content of the statements.
Nor the justification. There is no justification for judging another person based on the colour of their skin.

1) You made a racist comment that I took issue with:  “We all have biases, men/males more than most, and white males more than almost everybody else.”  You characterized my capacities/behavior based on my race.
2) You made a remark that reverse racism doesn't exist.  I happen to agree with that, because it's just called racism, not reverse racism.  The U.S. Census definition was to clearly define White as a race.  Merriam-Webster's definition was to clearly define racism.  I wanted to break it down for you, to address your claim.
3) So a homeless White man has more power than a wealthy non-White man?  Is this what you believe?  If not, then power is not absolute when it comes to race or gender.  If a White man went to China (arguably the second most powerful country in the world, possibly the first) and experienced discrimination based on his race, is that not racism?  Maybe you believe that racism is based on geography?

I believe a couple of simple things:  treat others how you wish to be treated, and individualism is one of the greatest rights that we possess as free human beings.

All, I am choosing not to continue this discussion, not out of lack of things to say or, worse, spite, but out of restraint.

I am a teacher. That is my calling. And I clearly failed at this. Perhaps the reason for failure was pride, perhaps being too passive-aggressive, or perhaps my own experiences with racism as a Latino man. Whatever the reason, there is no excuse for my failure. Anti-racist work needs to be slower, scaffolded, and, most of all, humble.

For this failure, I apologize.

However, one thing should be clear: I am not a racist. Indeed, my life's work as professor of Christian theology at a Catholic university is anathema to racism. Though I stand by everything I wrote, it could have been misstated - it behooves me to work on my written skill so it does not happen again. The specific phrase that has caused all the strife, "We all have biases, men/males more than most, and white males more than almost everybody else", came off too fast and aggressive and had no context. It was not meant to call out individuals or this community. It was meant to name one of the worst poisons U.S. society has - racism - and not to name particular individuals.

I now self-retire from The Acaeum. I hope in the future I am able to come back and visit some friends. Wish you all the best,

Héctor.

That said, this would seem like an over reaction to a discussion seeking to clarify the roots of what some see as racism in D&D from its founding fathers.

You were called out for blatantly racist posts. You prevaricated and obfuscated and offered justification for something that cannot be justified no matter how you try to reframe it.

That does not mean you should leave the forum. I do not know anyone here who rushes to judge, nor many who hold a grudge against others. Do not take yourself into exile thinking you are unwelcome or unwanted. If it is because your opinions have been challenged and found wanting, and you need to for your own well-being, so be it. We wish you well. But do not think you are not welcomed here.

Just my 2c.

You lost the argument with a single sentence Hector.  I agree with Ian, self exile is something you will have to reconcile with but is not something I am in favor of.  Debating differences is healthy.  Not so much when it goes off the rails.

From the PoD thread, to try to keep off-topic subjects on this thread...

for_the_love_of_the_stuff wrote in POD's on eBay:Neither is whining about "cultural zealotry" when people acknowledge bad shit from the past & pledge to do better.

I asked this before and was presented with an alleged example of sexism that could barely be dressed up as sexist except by the most sensitive of social justice warriors choosing to read what they want to project onto the text. Len Lakofka from Dragon Magazine (previous page 138 of this thread) as is the explanation of Len's shortcomings and lack of imagination from a reliable source who knew the guy.

.

So, regarding this alleged and touted 'bad shit from the past' that the left deem racist in D&D's history, are there any examples you can cite? And are they actually racists, or is this something people are choosing to self-project into someone else's writing?

I've never come across racism in D&D that I can recall, and I do not see our founding fathers of D&D as being racists. So where is this 'bad shit in the past', because if it is there, I sure as hell will welcome the 'pledge to do better.'

Its very easy to people to throw shit at writers and creators (some of which are dead and cannot defend themselves), and for others to defend them and say they should have shit thrown at them because of what they did, and people like me should not complain or try to defend them. But lets see proof of this. Let's 'unpack' these allegations and see what is done by the author/creator 40 years ago, and what is self-projection by the would-be judges setting their judgements upon them.

The left side of the brain is more verbal, analytical, and orderly..the right side is more creative or artistic.

Aren't some facts fun. (Or actually that being an opinion) aren't opinions on things interesting?
You can be kicked right out, but is being left out worse?
For a small nation, the UK sure has a lot of political parties.
