Well, since you put it right up there with Woodgrain sets, it's obviously right up there.

My second favorite line is this:

Well, considering I currently have two of these now and had one I sold before and of the 4, this one would come in 3rd place of the 4, perhaps it's not in as good as a condition as they think.

Yeah, I'm not paying that much for modules, especially ones I can't read because their are in glorified Glad Wrap.  However, if someone wants to collect and pay for this stuff, that's their prerogative.

When I played Yugioh and Pokemon when my kids were younger, someone derisively called our fun "cardboard crack."  He had a point.  There was a certain madness to paying $100.00 for some cards and ten cents for others.  I tried to keep our fun a game, but I was not completely successful.  I ended up also teaching my kids about relative value and maintaining cards in good condition.  I confess I made more than a few bucks off of buying and selling cards.  I've even made money selling gaming stuff, so maybe I'm a hypocrite.

I sense that a lot of collectors here have an interest in history, and owning objects such as these provide nostalgia that span time and space for them. The collector can connect through objects with the great events and people that these things represent.  These things can make its owner feel part of the grand sweep of gaming history, providing that connection with something larger than the individual who owns it.  I can't say that I am not also fascinated with D&D history, but auctions like this make me wonder about collecting superseding the game.  Our capitalistic system commercializes and monetizes almost everything.   Insanity?  That's a strong word.  Maybe something is rotten in Greyhawk?    And maybe I'm part of the problem.  

You guys are kinda missing what is really going on here. RPG collecting is more populate than ever, the rare and mint condition stuff will continue to rise in value. These items are hard to find and interest is way up.

That's not my argument though. My confusion comes with the fact that legit rare items and in some cases unique items are going for less than far more common items, items that aren't all that difficult to find even in shrink. Like the GDQ1-7 just sold for almost $1,400.00. I've seen at least 10 of these get sold in just the last ten years. The T1-4 for over $1,000? I've seen at very least twice and likely more as many as that get sold in that same time frame.

Both went for hundreds of dollars more than all but two of the GenCon tournaments Paul had up, none of which I think I ever seen been sold.  That astounds me.

And the Tsjoconth is obviously a true rarity(although it was the 5th one sold this year as logged by auctionhunter and 9th over the last 2 years), but it almost doubled the top price of the highest one this year and maybe ever?

So for me, it's not necessarily the money that some items are going for now it's where that money is being spent.
