Malc and I had a great time, many thanks!

Met lots of new people, and old friends.

Played 4 games, enjoyed them all immensely (and even got 3 prizes - thanks guys!)

Hotel wasn't THAT bad - as soon as you learned to avoid the restaurant, it was fine.

When the stars are right, we will attend again!

Cheers,

Had a great time chatting with you and Malc and also had a fantastic game of Paranoia on Thursday night.  Malc really got into the role of  "defender of the almighty Computer" and had to put down a couple of non-believers during the game.  And I really enjoyed being the leader of our little group, but I'm not sure Ryan (smarmy) felt the same way after going through 4 clones, two of which were killed (by accident of course) by me.     And thanks again to Malc for introducing me to Johnnie Walker Green Label which has to be the smoothest blended scotch I've ever had.

it's NOT the first weekend of June, it's the first THURSDAY of June every year.

So sometimes that is the first weekend, and sometime it's the second weekend ie: this year it was the second weekend since June 1st was on a Friday.

If you start marking the first weekend of every year, you might miss one !

Just put aside the first two weeks of June every year and you'll be good, plus you really need the extra time to prepare/recover from all the con goodness. (btw, the con wont' be the first weekend in June again until 2014)

It sucks that my department holds there annual global conference every year during the same time :(    I may have to ask them to change that

Well since everybody else is recapping there weekend here is my summary  :)

Wednesday:  Leave Calgary with many hopes and dreams of a good weekend, flight delays at Dallas delayed my arrival by 9 hours but I met Tim Kask at the Airport while waiting for the shuttle, we got off to a great start talking about the "old days" probably frightening the other occupants in the hotel Shuttle LOL.  We met a few more of the con attendees (Frank Menzter, Jim Ward, Doug and his wife, etc) and went off to IHOP for some late night grub.  Roomed with Martin (Prufrok), never checked in until after 3:00am.

Thursday:  Slept in and missed the hotel Breakfast (which I learned later was actually a good thing to miss).  We muddle about while the con was set up and had a chance to talk over anything and everything with many of the guests and organizers.  Thursday night I participated in "Battle for Middle Earth" Chainmail miniatures game Host by Leadjunkie (Marshal).  My partner in the game was none other than Dave "Zeb" Cook!!  I had to take a picture with me and him together just to prove it to my game group.  Zeb it turns out is an expert wargammer from day gone by and we thoroughly trounced our Orc and Goblin opposition.  The game was great, the miniatures were beautiful and playing with Zeb was amazing.  Once again I stayed up until 3:30 am conversing with Tim, Marshall and other con goers  :)

Friday:  My Morning game was canceled so I spent most of the morning buying up everything I was missing from the vendors:  Bill Barsh, Allan Grohe, Doug (con stuff) and a few others.  Packed everything away and stared to game.  Friday afternoon/evening was Tim Kasks "Snake riders" slug fest!!  With a joyous crew which included many regulars we ran around the countryside running from Giant Apes, Massive snakes and ancient temples.  We managed to survive (except for one PC death) running out scared and dooming the world to eternal pain and anguish.  Once again up until 3:00 am with the regular crew.

Saturday:  The "big" day really!!  We started off with a terrible breakfast from the restaurant.  I actually walked away from it and trust me I do not walk away from many meals LOL.  On to gaming again, this time it was the now "infamous" table swap extravaganza playing around an hour and twenty minutes with each of Frank Mentzer (Boot Hill), Steve Winter (Star Frontiers), Jeff Dee (Caveman RPG) and Jim Ward (Met Alpha).  It was pretty cool playing all those games.  Afterwards it was the panels: Old school gaming, 2nd ed gaming and the artists panel; these were very well done and well attended.
Next came the raffle (sadly my five tickets were not drawn) and the auction (yah I won something).  The auction was pretty cool, almost felt like a mini version of the Gencon auction for a while when me and Bill were fighting for the Golden Rod Sheets.  I got the sheets and an old Judges guild names book, both great purchases.

Saturday night was Runequest with Jennell.  It has been decades since I played this game and it ran well.  As opposed to trying to save the world as in Tim's game we were tasked with save a herd of cows from some rustlers in a scared area.  Well after a near TPK with all but two characters being crushed, the cows returned home safely; a high cost to pay for livestock for sure.
Later on while taking a breather by the pool with Leadjunkie , Bill Webb of Frog God games walked by and invited us to their "brainstorming" session for their next Kickstarter project.  We were full participants and helped contribute (I hope in a good way) to their plans.  It was very cool to be a part of for sure.  Another 3:00am bedtime  :)

Sunday:  The morning came quickly and it was off to a game of "The Fantasy Trip" GM'd by none other than Steve Winter.  Once again I had not played this game since High school and Steve was a master at getting us going and bonking heads.  Great game that brought back lots of memories of our old adventures in the land of hexes and meta hexes.  Later that night after the con was tore down and most of the patrons and guest had left a few of us enjoyed some TexMex and went a saw Prometheus at the local theater.

Overall it was the best NTRPGcon ever, hardly slept, gamed constantly, good friends and conversation, bona fide special guests and gaming celebrities.  Sad to see it end but so happy that it happened.

Onwards and upwards guys  :D

You can always tell the lack of sleep confuses people and blends the days together...

ALL the panels except the Artist Panel were held on Friday, not Saturday... obviously Jeff lost track of days in his loss of sleep stupor :)

But that's okay, as long as you had fun Jeff, it doesn't matter what day you thought it was

Speaking of the panels, I "moderated" the Friday ones (I say that loosely, any panel containing one Tim Kask does not require moderating, you merely step back and let nature take over and congratulate yourself on fine work done) and they were really fun.  It was good being able to ask questions about 2E to Zeb Cook and Steve Winter, and hear the story from the horses' mouth.  Also the Sandy Petersen/Steve Marsh panel into the origins of Call of Cthulhu was very, very interesting.  The Eldritch Ent panel of Tim, Frank and Jim was great for those that hadn't heard all the old stories before, and I'm glad we got all of them on video.  And finally hearing Tim Kask and Michael Curtis talk about their gaming theories was great (but since I was running errands at the time, the one I am the least familiar with, so I'll have to watch the video like everyone else once it gets posted).

I felt like attendance was far less than it should of been for most of these (in the 10-20 range, I thinkg the CoC panel was the least at 9-10 attendees).  I attribute this to not really having panels last year (due to Rob's Dungeon design class) and to the fact the panels were held in the board rooms on the complete opposite side of the con where all the main rooms were (no walk by traffic to speak of).  I thought the raffle and auction filled the room very nicely, though I would also like to see them next year held in a bigger room with more walk-by traffic.  I'm sure we'll find a good space for next year.

Anyway, thanks so much for all the special guests that agreed to appear on the panels (Tim, Frank, Jim, Sandy, Steve Winter, Steve Marsh, Zeb Cook, and Michael Curtis).  Be sure and look for these when they are finally available online.

Will that video also be posted, Mike?

I decided to stay at the table for selling books vs. attending the panels, otherwise I would have definitely attended all of them.

I believe David has the Q&A's up at this time.  I haven't watched them yet so I'm praying that my inane questions didn't ruin the CoC or 2E panels.

Well, first I have to say that my son and I had a blast at this Con!  As my first real Con experience, it couldn't have been much better.  My only complaint was the hotel's temperature control systems were all over the place with hot hallways and some gaming rooms and then frigid gaming rooms on the other side of the venue.  Oh, and the restaurant wasn't very good but that was less of an issue with me as I had a car and could get offsite to eat.  We were signed up for an event in pretty much every slot and enjoyed them all.

We arrived Wednesday night, somehow dodging the storms that had plagued the Dallas area all afternoon, causing massive delays at the airport and a log-jam of people trying to check in to the hotel.  We arrived just before the hoards started arriving at the hotel so check in was smooth.  We then spent three or four hours hanging out in the registration area talking to Doug, and then Jim Ward, Steve Winter, Tim Kask, and Frank Mentzer as those special guests eventually arrived from their long day with the airlines.  When we went to bed at around 1AM, Doug was just leaving with a couple of other guys to take the special guests out for some grub at IHOP.

Thursday we slept in, missed the special guest lunch at Texas Land & Cattle and eventually ended up at Fuddruckers for a late lunch.  We then spent a couple of hours browsing the stuff for sale in the registration/dealer area and this began my purchases that eventually ended up being about twice what I had budgeted for buying goodies from vendors.  I was honestly surprised at how much cool stuff there was to buy and each time to looked through the various tables and shelves, I found something else that I wanted.  Thursday night we played in Mythrus Tower with Matt Finch.  As a huge fan of Erol Otus, it was really cool that he was playing in this game as well.  I played a Magic User and my son was a Thief.  Both of our characters died in this game.  I can't remember how mine went but my son hit a cabbage that wasn't a cabbage with his sword releasing something bad (acid? gas?) that caused 70 points of damage.  Bye bye first level character!  Matt allowed us to make new characters and continue.  I brought in a Cleric and my son a Fighter.  Those two survived until the end of the session.  At one point Matt asked my son if he was under 18, which he is (13) and Matt then gave him a softcover copy of Swords & Wizardry which he later autographed for him.  This was a super cool thing to do and just served to make the session even more memorable.  Matt runs a fun game, stands on his chair for much of it, keeps things moving quickly and in our session somehow managed to juggle 13 players.  Lots of fun and a good start to the events we were signed up for.

Friday morning we were up early to play DCC RPG with Michael Curtis.  This game was much more fun than I was expecting.  I really don't need another game system as I'm perfectly happy with pre-2e D&D but by the end of this session, DCC had won me over and I would consider playing or running it in the future.  Michael is an excellent DM, very animated and boisterous.  He perched on his chair like a pterodactyl during one scene and actually took a pratfall during another.  Like Matt, he kept things moving for the ten players and in our five or six hour session, we managed to navigate the shifting tower and defeat Emirikol.  I played a Dwarf and my son was a Thief.  One of the players playing an Elf and sitting to my immediate right (Wolfbrother?) called on the Three Fates and rolled very well which made the climactic fight far easier for us than it would have otherwise been.  This was our second game where Erol Otus was a fellow player.

After a break in the afternoon, we played in Tim Kask's Snakeriders of the Aradondo OD&D game Friday night.  This was such an interesting and unique experience!  I have played AD&D 1e and 2e, and plenty of basic and expert D&D but had never played OD&D.  Tim's game certainly didn't disappoint.  Peril around every corner, jungle teeming with giant carnivorous apes, caimans, giant frogs and bigger things, and a dangerous and spooky underground environment.  I played a Dwarf Fighter and my son was a Human Thief.  Sadly my son is the one who taught us lesson learned #1 as mentioned by Tim in his Con recap earlier in this thread.  Climbing a tree while on watch and invisible only to fall asleep later is not conducive to survival.  He was dragged away by apes never to be seen again, except for a hand and some clothing fragments.  Another PC died after having his head torn from his shoulders by a giant snake (Kingofpain I believe) but at least he survived until the very end of the session before dying a horrible death.  All in all this was an incredibly fun session and a real glimpse into the mind of Tim Kask.  And Erol was in this game as a fellow player as well.  Too cool!

Saturday morning we were up early again to play in Jim Ward's Metamorphosis Alpha game.  As this was part of the GameFest, we played with Jim for a little over an hour and then switched to Boot Hill with Frank Mentzer, and after another hour or so switched to Star Frontiers with Steve Winter, and then to Cavemaster with Jeff Dee and then back to finish up with Jim's MA game.  These games were all good fun.  Jim's MA game was the hardest I laughed all weekend.  As the youngest, Jim made my son the LT, and another player as the oldest was the Sarge.  Poor Sarge was tasked with trying to comprehend my son's orders and mis-interpret them to keep us alive.  The highlight was one of the characters getting exposed to enough radiation to mutate and him giving birth to the "Crystal Baby".  Words can't describe what followed.  I will say that Tim's description of Jim Ward is accurate.  Kindly manner, concerned demeanor and expressive face.  Listening to Jim describe our doom in a kindly and concerned voice is something else.  Frank's Boot Hill game was great, and Frank gave us a nice history lesson to start things off.  Showed how much time and effort he put into researching stuff.  We were really just getting started and were just about to get into a shooting match with some indians when we had to switch.  I'd love to see Frank's notes for this scenario.  Then we were off to Steve's Star Frontiers.  Steve runs a fun game and it would have been cool to play in a full session of one of his games.  We fought some huge Yeti-like aliens and then some robots.  I haven't played Star Frontiers in years and had a great time.  Then we moved to Cavemaster with Jeff Dee.  I had already purchased the Cavemaster book from Jeff the day before and had started looking through it.  I thought it looked interesting and the short session with Jeff only solidified my thoughts.  The unique mechanic and distinct feel of the game make it fun.  Not having to worry about magic items, spells and monsters, but instead having to worry about food, water and other resources make for a different style of game.  I'll definitely introduce this game to my kids sometime this summer.

Saturday afternoon we attended the auction/raffle.  It was entertaining watching the bidding wars, culminating in the big one for the reference sheets.  Then it was OD&D Lich Dungeon with Frank Mentzer Saturday night.  I've long admired Frank's work and was really looking forward to playing D&D with him as the DM.  This game didn't disappoint.  Frank runs a great game.  I played a Cleric and my son played a Fighter.  We had fun with the puzzles in this old school dungeon that Frank reminded us that he wrote in the 1970's.  We encountered some not friendly kobolds and then orcs.  Two of us were killed, my character included.  My son's character dragged mine out of the dungeon and he had a chance to survive after some healing from an NPC Cleric but I failed my system shock roll with a whopping 90% on my roll.  I won't soon forget the Mad Cleric knocking on doors and eventually finding one to speak back to him.  He was making a couple of the player's in the group nervous and overly cautious but I thought it was great fun!  Thanks to Kingofpain for making this an even more memorable game than it would have been, and thanks for the beer!  Thanks to Frank for running a fun game!

Sunday morning we were up early again to play Dragon Lairds with Jim Ward.  There were seven players, Jim included, and he gave away a signed copy of the game to the winner (sadly not me!).  This was a fun game and I will definitely consider picking this up in the near future.  The Tom Wham art on the cards is worth the price of the game.  After this game, we hung around saying goodbye and getting some last minute autographs and then departed the Con heading for Houston to continue our summer vacation visiting family.

We had a blast and will definitely return in the future if circumstances allow!

I picked up some great stuff at the Con, including Haven The Free City, DCC RPG, most of the digest modules that were printed for the Con, a few items from Bill Barsh (including 1 of 100 on T2), Lesserton and Mor, and other fun stuff.

Many thanks to Doug and Mike for putting on such a great Con.  Thanks to all the special guests for their time, willingness to sign books, general companionship and running great games.  And thanks to Kingofpain for the welcoming my son and I to Dallas, being a genuinely nice guy and the free beer!

Excellent, got my copies of these modules, thanks Doug / Mike !!

I hopefully will make it there in person next year, I haven't played D&D or any other RPG in about 20 years (only collecting) and never been to a con, so I look forward to it.

Thanks,

Yep....that was my character that got chomped there near the end by the huge snake creature that came out of the mist in the cavern and mesmerized me before I could even get an attack on it.  I hate it when that happens.  :)   I just wish that your son had heeded my advice and not gone up into that tree.  I kept telling him it was a bad idea!     Actually I was the one that convinced him to climb up the tree and be our lookout.  But it was his dice that failed him when Tim asked him to roll to see if he fell asleep or not.  We couldnt find enough of him left in the ape poop to resurrect.

Truthfully I didnt expect the game to go in the direction it did, but when you have two people in the party that want to play everything safe and do absolutely nothing....well you have to take drastic steps sometimes.  Going around and knocking on closed doors seemed like the best way I could think of to get them to loosen up a little, but it ended up making them even more paranoid.  When the guy sitting next to me asked me what the heck I was doing, I told him that I was attempting to "spread the word" of my chosen diety like any good cleric should.  So what does he do, he actually tried to slap me!  Frank had him roll an attack on me and he missed (what was he thinking?  A halfling trying to slap a 6'4" human in the face???) so when no one answered the door I went to the next one twenty feet away and knocked again.  The halfling actually said he was going to stab me with his sword if I did it again!?!  So what do I do?  I knocked on the next door....only this time I got an answer.  Not from within but from the door itself.  Leave it to Frank to have a talking door in his dungeon.  We had a nice little conversation and found out that behind the door was a nice little teleportation trick.  God only knows what would have happened if I hadnt knocked.  :)

Not sure what my favorite part of that adventure was though.  The halfling climbing into the fountain of glowing water and then not being able to get out was particularly hilarious....not because he kept failing his "climb out of the slippery fountain" rolls, but the fact that when he pleaded for someone to help him, everyone left the room.     The battle with the kobolds was particularly fun.  I think that is where my character really earned the "Mad Cleric" title.  Instead of being cautious about it I just screamed like a madman and went into a berserker rage against the kobolds.  I must have killed four or five of them by myself before anyone caught up to me to start helping out.  The mage cast a sleep spell on a handful of others that I ended up bashing with my mace as well.  So when another group of kobolds came around the corner towards us I was still screaming, covered in kobold blood from head to toe and I started flinging kobold guts and body parts down the corridor at the new group.  They failed their morale roll, turned around, and ran like little girls.  8O   Ah...what fun that was.

Anytime man.  Although next year I need to plan a bit better.  I still had beer left over that I had to take home on Sunday night.  Malc, Smarmy, and a few other people helped out but not nearly enough.  And I never ran into Chainsaw after Thursday afternoon to give him one of the bottles of Chimay Blue I picked up.  More people just need to get into town on Wednesday instead of Thursday next year so we can all sit around and play Circus Maximus and get drunk as hell.  Chariot racing is more fun that way.

Lich Dungeon is extremely sandboxy -- you have 32 options when you first arrive on L1 -- which in turn feeds the DM many options to build on party actions. It was a delight to have a diverse and contradictory group of players to create such interesting, oft amusing, and occasionally tense situations.

WE HAVE HEARD YOUR VOICES FRIENDS! Here is the new venue for the 5th Annual NTRPG con in 2013 (and, hopefully, every NTRPG con going forward).

This place is simply incredible. We shouldn't ever have to change hotels again, and we look forward to a long association with the DFW Marriott South at Centreport. Food is great, you can order off menu or have a buffet for $10 (with lots of choices and good food). There is a bar. Free fresh coffee in the mornings. Location is great...just south of the airport, right off 360 and Trinity Mills road north of Arlington. Places to eat on the other side of the parking lot if you want to eat out and don't mind walking (Jimmy Johns, Jersey Mikes, Double Dave's Pizza, McDonalds, Jack in the Box, Wendys, Simply Burgers, Buffalo Cantina, Pizza Hut (takeout only), Starbucks, Hot Bowl Cafe, Midori Sushi, and more). The ballroom is twice the size of last year and we should also have a couple of boardrooms. Rooms are a reasonable $105 each (Con rate) and they look nice. They have a experienced, dedicated staff and are used to holding conventions and seminars much larger than NTRPG con. This is a quantum leap from anything we have had before...yes, this makes us a legit con from this point forward! Hope to see everyone in 2013 and beyond!

I thought you were already a legit Con. My mistake I guess  :D Graz on the new venue.

I will register as soon as it goes live. I had the best time ever (Don't tell Doug, but I liked it better than GaryCon :))
