That's the 4E Tamoachan given out as the DM Rewards program. There are a few classic titles reused for Rewards, I kinda wish they hit the regular market - I'd have to think they'd be strong sellers.

Interesting fact, Dungeons & Dragons title has never been translated in other languages, except in French!

Thats quite an amazing collection of red boxes. I never new so many were produced. No wonder Frank M. wakes up every morning on top of pile of gold and flies convention to convention in a private jet.

For many years there have been strong pro French Language movements in France, especially regarding commercial products. By the 90's they passed a comprehensive law that has been quite problematic for a number of multinational companies who try to maintain brand names across the world.

Oddly enough, academics are somewhat excluded from the restrictions and as I am told, the rule of thumb in French academics is "Publish in English or Perish in French".

Nonetheless, TSR was probably wise to stick to French for the titles since it is so close to the English original and using French avoided potential harassment from the French language "advocates."

Not sure about "advocates" of French language (at least back in early 80's). Actually, there was only a low percent of players who were able to speak/or even understand English. Most of time, the only person who read English was the DM. BTW, the used language during playing session was a strange mixing between French and English terms, a Frenglish language.

I guess that the use of a French name instead of the English one was especially to seduce a market composed mainly by "English non-speaking persons".

Dragon Pass Conventions, completing my collection of RuneQuest/Gloranthan titles 1975-1981. Never even expected to find an original copy, so a printout of the pdf on boardgamegeek filled the hole in my collection for a while - the last original I know of was mentioned here by mbassoc a half-dozen years ago. (Nomad Gods had been the second-longest wait.)

Still looking for an affordable copy of Dragontales, to complete my run of Wyrms Footnotes, & maybe even someday to start acquiring Alarums & Excursions from that era.
