Hi,

Cosplay (ie dressing up as a tv/movie/book character) seems to be big everywhere atm.

Really don't see the attraction myself. Unless someone is doing a good impersonation of Raquel Welch in 1 million years bc, of course :lol:

You got me there! But then again, some of the...ahem..."attendees" have no business wearing leather either!

Last year there was only one charity recipient. And if I recall, there's usually only one recipient every year.

This year there were two, which together totaled over $31,000, in a year which charitable donations never exceed $20,000.

Two years ago when we donated to Gary's Charity (the year that they had the fiasco with Christian Children's Fund who refused to take the money...), we helped raise over (only) $17,000.

This was a good year.

Making a comeback again, it seems.

Still curious as to what might've been if Barker & co. had gone beyond that onto SCA & RPG territory back in 1950 (per http://games.dir.groups.yahoo.com/group ... sage/25701 , etc.) had Phil not refocused somewhat a couple of years later. They weren't /that/ far off, given the use of both named "PCs" and "NPCs" in what was at that point a world creation exercise shared to a degree.

Anyway to get young kids into the area of RPG Games, I'm for. I understand that it is hard to move these kids from cartoon to RPG's but at least we have the oppertunity. Also, I saw many parents chaperoning their kids which I equate with the reputation of RPG (or at least GENCON) changing for the better.

Also, the more who attend the better for my city.

Comparing apples to apples, we should exclude the Gygax auction. In 2009, Gen Con raised a little over $13,000 for charity (through the charity auction, Cardhalla, and Ace of Aces). So that was actually about the same as this year. If 2008 raised $17,000, then this year (like last year) was down.

It's true that another $18,000 was raised for the Gygax memorial. But $9000 of that was actually donated by True Dungeon. So the Gygax auction raised about $9000. Not bad at all, given the tough economic times. But this was for items from Gary's personal collection. It's not surprising that it raised good money. And, of course, $1400 of that went for a single briefcase.

All that being said, these are tough times, and I think it's fantastic that gamers at a convention continue to support such worthy causes.

I wasn't there long myself, because I the shaft when my brother came into town and talked me into being his designated driver for a bar crawl Friday night. Only got 4 hours sleep, so I had to leave MichiCon early before I fell asleep.

Not much going on there, still. (I think the only D&D games were 3.5; even the RPGA didn't show up). Maybe I need to nag my Meetup members to run some games at WinterCon. I liked the convention program, though -- it was a souvenir edition of Deck of Many Things!

ObGenCon: All I got in the auction was a copy of "Booty & the Beasts," but I didn't spend that much time in the auction room this year. I overbooked myself on games and parties this year. (Went straight from the Acaeum dinner to the Fat Dragon/Trollords party, in fact. The Acaeum is great to hang out with, but there were more single women at the other party.)

Made a fairly awesome find of fifty-cent White Dwarf magazines at the Half Price Books booth, though. Now that Goodman Games and Crazy Egor aren't at Gen Con, Half Price Books is the lead candidate for the coveted "Exhibitor That Contrarian Visits First" award.

OK, Now I am really pissed that I missed the con. Oh well. I am planning on running something at Wintercon depending on when it is set. Definately doing something at the next Michicon, too. 1e for sure.
