It would be interesting to see how much prices are inflated by people who always bid on certain items.

I've never used the feature before how do you do it exactly?

That said, I'm buying tons of stuff from the same seller and getting some good deals. I am not sure I would want that info posted or someone else may start fighting with me for the rare bits that slip through.

would people be okay with posting their EBay I'ds?

Faro/Harami, or whatever you are going by this week; WHY would you do that?

Already explained =>

Shouting at me in ALL CAPS in PMs isn't likely to encourage a positive response. Mind you, after getting ALL CAPS in a previous email where I was trying to help you, that's not surprising.

MetamorphosisSigma wrote:It's pretty poor form to post someone's buying history to a public forum.

ymmv, but "poor form" in my book is not posting public information, but adding an interpretation layer like "I got this for $5 instead of $100 because the seller didn't describe it properly/put on a stupidly low BIN, etc." which makes us look like vultures here to any lurkers passing by.

q.v. also "Interesting items" threads. :)

There's a thread here for that and people were perfectly happy to do so, it seems...

Its as simple as posted above.  Do an "advanced" Ebay search.  Search by bidder, enter their Ebay ID, and select completed auctions.

I think we have a list somewhere on the forum of many user's IDs.

It took me a minute to figure out to what that jab was referring. Evidently you remember my purchase history better than I do.

I don't see how being happy about a good deal and posting about it is out of line, and I certainly don't think there was anything wrong with purchasing an item someone undervalued slightly (they were hardly worth $100, maybe $20), especially with a BiN. I never said the seller was stupid to list them at that amount, and they were described adequately. I happened to get lucky and catch the listings about 5 minutes after they was posted. If that makes me a vulture, so be it. Or is it just that we're not supposed to appear to be vultures?

I don't see the issue.  The only reason I can think of to want to maintain the disconnect is when commenting on auctions here, trying to dissuade or otherwise try to get people to NOT bid on things you want to get an advantage or thin the bidder pool.  Which I don't see a whole lot of going on.  Conversely, if you are bidding up items to inflate thier sale value, more power to you.  If you are playing that game, you are gonna get screwed sooner or later, and probably more often than not.  Which is fine with me, as long as you are paying for the items you win.

All in all, just don't see why its worth getting bent out of shape about.

And if catching a badass deal just after its listed and snapping it up is being a dick, then I am at least in the top 10.  Probably 5.  But I'm sure I've overpaid more than twice whatever I've saved on other stuff I wanted.

Huh. I never knew you could search by bidder until today. I can't for the life of me think of one good reason why eBay would let you do such a thing.

Mine's not too embarrassing, just four or five entries, though I overpaid somewhat for one thing   .

It use to be a good way to find items.  You get to know the Ebay IDs of people you generally bid against and can then cyberstalk them.

They probably let you do this because it is a public auction house.  It lets sellers check out potential buyers (such is in a make best offer BIN), etc.

I can't explain, but it scares the hell out of me.

Don't like being stalked or monitored or checked on. Hadn't the slightest idea it could be done. Right to privacy pretty high on my list. That it can be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done. Please notice the ALL CAPS.

Hector.

It's a dick move and you know it. Paul's auctions are publicly promoted, any else on here can choose to list their buying history if they wish. Why don't you list yours, David?

I've always found it mystifying that Ebay would post this information online and allow anyone to look at it.  It's just astonishing Ebay would think that's OK.

So what exactly is Ebay doing wrong by allowing others to see what auctions you have won?  You can look at someone's feedback and get essentially the same information (at least as long as someone leaves you feedback).  And you still have to know someones ID to do the search.

Mars wrote:It use to be a good way to find items.

Heck, it used to be a great way since you could search a user ID and find out what they were currently bidding on.  Now you can only see auctions that have already ended.

Chucho68 wrote:Don't like being stalked or monitored or checked on. Hadn't the slightest idea it could be done. Right to privacy pretty high on my list. That it can be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done.

Using the words "stalked" and "monitored" are a bit over the top IMO.  It's Ebay....not Stormfront or Seigheil.org.  I dont think government stooges are checking out your auction purchases.     And if "right to privacy" is that important to you, staying off the internet is probably the best course of action.  Right now you have little privacy if you post and purchase using the internet.  Everything you do leaves a trail.

Badmike wrote:It's a dick move and you know it.

Yeah, it was.  I understand the point being made.  But posting all of that info was unnecessary.  His point could have been made without it.

Ebay is so hypcritical. They hide IDs for bidding so you can't offer a phony 2nd buyer option, but this basically gives the green light to seller fraud (phony bidders, etc).  Then again they allow anyone anywhere to see your entire buying history.  Weird.

It just reinforces the fact no one anywhere needs to know your ebay id.  Heck, I've got a "secret" id I use for buying only that I've had for over 10 years, no one has discovered it yet

Good point about viewing Ebay feedback.  I guess that is visible for a reason.

If posting public information results in fewer hyperbolic statements (two within one day) such as "reselling items from that Dragon lot is the ONLY way someone like me could afford to buy it" and "and also as a collector with limited cash flow, I am not likely to buy other copies of this book" (on a ~$40 purchase) I'm cool with that. Worth checking out some of those sellers for "fun finds", too.

There are many collectors/gamers whose purchase budget is $25/month, if that, rather than 100 times as much and I don't recall them complaining anything like as much about "not being able to afford things".
Well, 'cept for some in the OSR crowd complaining about the price of OD&D boxes and using that as an excuse to justify pirating WHFRP 1e/2e *g*

For the same period? As you wish. The good thing about the eBay system as it's currently set up is that you can usually also see who's won anything you've bid on. Much easier than playing "recognise the feedback score" or "hunt the feedback comments" (all also public domain, of course). :)

From that above link, it'd be good to find out what the posta address was for this sale....

LOT 001  - $50.76 - Creations Unlimited Collector Set Autographed - jonb7839

As regards eBay's hiding of buyer's ID's I much preferred to open honesty of the old system, even if it meant people could see what other items I was bidding on. I could see what they were bidding on also, and if I missed something I'd more than likely find it, and on the whole prices were higher and fewer things slipped through the net and went cheap. The anonymous system drives prices lower, because not everyone who would have bid on an item ends up bidding on the item.

In an anonymous system, as a seller you have to open an ebay shop and you cannot afford to run a business based on 99c auctions, because there is no way of ensuring you get a reasonable price unless you have a dedicated following. The only way to cover your outlay is to set the price yourself and pay the higher fees to do so.

The old system was cheaper for the seller, reached higher prices in open auction, was a faster process for selling stock at acceptable prices, and for the buyer, it was fairer, more transparent, more honest, and offered greater certainty of not missing out on bargains or the opportunity to bid on real rarities.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.
