You know, I was really into this auction:

Then, I looked REALLY close.....

Those are re-shrinked. No seal on the back. At least, that's my opinion, and I'm glad I didn't bid on these and looked closer.

What do you guys think?

Actually, I'd vote for "original".  No big shrink overlap on the back, but some (a lot? most?) of the boxed sets didn't have that, as I recall.  And as anyone who's attempted a re-shrink can attest, it's REALLY hard to make the shrink look as pretty as it is in those scans.

I'm not talking like, last week reshrink. I mean like, 30 years ago reshrink, or store reshrink, something like that. Not accusing the seller of anything at all. All the other shrinked box sets I looked at had the seal. Zero shrink overlap on the back on these, and the three or four I've had my hands on have all had the shrink overlap seal on the back.

It depends. I worked in a record store in the early 80's and we had a shrinkwrap machine in back. The machine was just a large dispenser of the plastic wrap with a cutting bar and a high heat air blower that shrunk the wrap around the package (in our case the record album, back before the days of CDs). Those looked pretty smooth when done.

I still have one of those "machines" here at the house... and some ancient shrink on the roll to go with it... works pretty well and I can make some super smooth wrap... one day I'll shrink some digest module for "complete set" of NTRPGCon stuff in shrink so I can get Smarmy to bid on it :)

HOLY $#!+

Is this typical of what these books are going for these days?  I know they are first printings, but still ...

I agree wholeheartedly ... I wanted to take a shot at these, but got blown out of the water. Oddly enough, the 2nd print Monster Manual, which was in nice shape (see below) went for less than $60, which I lost out on  PDT_Armataz_01_05

Thank you - Paul

"Okay, we turn the corner and see a Purple 'WHAT' !?!" . . (the DM rolls a 20 or so he says) . . It all went black right after that.

I also agree about this.  I have watched the last few 1st print Players Handbooks in reasonably nice to VF/NM shape since late 2011... $300, $450! and now this one for $256 I think the price for nicer 1st print copies has definitely gone up.  I've seen some rather beat up 1st print PHB going for less than $100 in the same time frame.  The 1st print DMG was a new high water mark price for me.  I bid on these until like you I got blown out as well.  Not too much of a surprise but almost expected given that nicer shape copies of 1st prints of any MM, PHB or DMG don't pop up too often any more.

If I had the funds in the paypal account, I probably would have hit the $100BIN. The seller is going to get a bonus, methinks.

But, I do like this line, "No One Else on e-Bay has this for sale!"

Oh, really? Get out much?

Okay, *technically* this is correct. Other sellers aren't selling the same exact set. Sheesh!  :P
