Normally, Vancouver is a charming city with lots of history and culture, courteous drivers, well-mannered panhandlers and prostitutes the police unofficially ignore.  Oh, and the Stanley Park Zoo is really cool.

Half of the Highlander TV series was filmed there, in Gastown and nearby locations.

So, aside from the whores, bums and cinematic beheadings....it's a pretty interesting and low-key place.

(People in Seattle didn't riot after the Superbowl...partly because it took place 2000 miles away...but people are still mad enough to riot whenever they are reminded of it.  The city most definitely has not gotten over that game.)

Possibly because Canada is still surprisingly British...or at least British Columbia is...and fan violence seems to be a British Isles tradition?

There was one interesting twist to the story coverage that I noted:  The articles about the riot talked about the police tying to stop it.  If the same riot had happened in Seattle the news coverage would have blamed the police for causing the riot.

Our UK buddy and leading Acaeum poster of all time Killjoy (Al Silcock) is doing a marathon 121 mile jaunt in Wales this week. If you are on Facebook, post some encouragement on his page to keep his spirits up, he's reading his page every evening when he finishes and every morning before he starts.  Unlike past trips to Africa, Mongolia, Australia, and other far points of the globe for marathons Al is doing this on his own (not an organized event).  Good Luck Al! Give him a pat on the back or give him a hard time, but let him know you are behind him.

Ironically, environmentalists are behind this.

Because no nuke plants have been built in decades, older plants are given the go ahead despite problems, simply because they cannot afford to be taken offline.  If they were shut down, energy costs would soar and in some cases total blackouts would result.  This unsafe practice of rubber stamping older plants is going to come back and bite one of these states in the ass someday.

A two year old plant built under newer guidelines and using newer, safer materials is going to be a lot better than a 35 year old plant with rusting pipes. Other nations in the world don't seem to have a problem constructing new, safer, more efficient nuclear plants. Maybe then we could shut down some of these older plants.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Rob abandoned this website long ago.  Now the domain has just expired.  There has been a blurb on the site for over a year that all of the forum material was being archived and moved to another location (or something along that line).
