Hi,

in the UK we don't celebrate Halloween much.

We think Americans are a little odd for going so OTT on it

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. We always decorate the yard up with headstones and these cool novelty skull shaped lanterns. We also have a battery powered doormat that makes screaming noises when you step on it. Scares the crap out of the trick-or-treaters.

Had to stop the traditional jack-o'-lantern carving though. Takes too damn long and I can't stand the smell of pumpkin guts. :puker:

What, you don't like booze???

In the US, most holidays (religous or otherwise) have been co-opted by adults and used as an excuse to get loaded on booze. For example, July 4th around here has become the day you don't want to drive, ANYWHERE, since most Texans have chosen to celebrate our nation's independence by getting into horrific drunk driving accidents.

Do not drink hot coffee through a TimTam, as the TimTam will turn into mush.

However, this forces one to slurp up the entire TimTam in one fell swoop.

I wish I could find one of those. Instead, I'll have to make do with trying to live on Tim Tam Trail (if the house comes through, anyway...)

Amen brother. In my sub the wives stay home and pass out candy while the dads walk the kids and get hammered.

Halloween up here is usually fairly cold, so we need the liquid courage. Also, many of the mom's have surprise drinks for us!

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

It would be cooler if they would change into "surprise nighties" for all the dads to check out as they go house to house!!! :twisted:

Hi,

ah, that explains it. Here in the UK we don't NEED an excuse to get loaded on booze!

I guess the reason you Americans have so many statutory holidays is you only have a couple of weeks paid vacation from work? Here its usually 20 - 25 days as standard.

Many Americans only get one week paid vacation. Though the average is probably two weeks. And don't overlook the fact that Fed employees actually get more holidays off than us private sector employees.

Pretty much every company I have worked for rewards its employees for longevity by giving them more paid time off for vacation. I knew one guy that had worked for the same company for 13 years. He had four weeks of paid vacation every year. With all the allocated sick/personal time off that we automatically received, he had something like six weeks paid time off in total.

Same here. Based on longevity. But there are a lot of companies that start people at one week. Some even don't generate vacation time until you have a year in.

I think it has been growing in recent years. I get a lot of recruitment ads sent to me and I would say that the average has crept up from 20 days maybe ten years ago, to now, 25-30 days annual holiday (plus offical holidays on top), as an average. Sometimes you get +1 day/year as well

Public sector and NGOs tend to offer a bit more more annual holiday than private sector.

That is in the UK, I think it is even better in many other European countries (thinks of Germany / France as examples...)
