So I sent them another email stating the flat rate box $11 and this is their reply:

Hi,

Unfortunately we do not have the equipment to offer flat rate shipping. I am very sorry for any inconvenience that this matter may have caused to you.

They are full of shit.  What equipment.  Boxes are free from the post office.

No. You pay $29.61. Find out the package only weighs 4lds and cost them $11 to ship and you get a big FU! when you ask them why they screwed you. You have no claim and no right to claim because you know both the shipping charge up front, and T&T's reputation. The only person to blame is yourself.

Had very similar discussions in the past about $60+ international shipping with no tracking or insurance included. They are just a bunch of AHs when it comes to asking them about shipping or the condition of something they are selling. Still, they make money out of people so everyone's happy.

Are these the same people that f'cked up GenCon this year?

I do not know if they "f'cked" up Gencon but they did bid on every rpg item that came up.  Which I find dubious at best.

Just looked at the link.  Apparently they want $64.14 USD to ship it to Canada.

And here was me think they were being paid to run the auction as well?

At least they've remembered to mark it as "Priority Mail International".  I keep coming across their auctions where they've got shipping to Canada marked as "First Class International", yet the price is often twice what USPS's maximum rate for FCI is.

I might not like how they (TrollandToad) bid on almost everything listed in the auction (atleast the rumours I heard stated that). I think someone on here said if they can make 10-20% profit on something they'll try to buy it so I can't fault them for that. I don't like it....but....as long as they pay their fees I can't say anything about it.

I definitely take my business elsewhere and eventually if everyone did that, they wouldn't have the $$$ to do it next year...or the year after....or the....

As regards T&T bidding on everything, I see no problem with that. If there is a 20% profit in something over a 6 month period, and your business is tailored to shifting such things, it's good business sence.

Yes, put up a stall and sell products and make money from the buying public. Yes, bid on everything that you can make money out of. I'm damn sure I'd have been around everyone elses stalls looking for a bargain, and I'm sure everyone was.

But running a charity auction for a personal profit, even if that persoanl profit is just the insentive scheme to list all the crap that wouldn't normally have been sold, is still making a profit from something that is supposed to be for charity. Maybe it's not dishonest. Maybe no-one else could be arsed. Buy maybe, just maybe, T&T could have done the charitable thing and offered their time and profits to the charity for free.

In regard to T&T's record of dishonest in their descriptions and postage costs, everyone is well aware of the scaming and exageration they perform, and of their attitute and beligerance to people when they are asket to explain it. I haven't ever posted my experiences with them here, but mine are simialr to the many who have reported issues on these pages.

Many people lambast Cougie for similar forms of dishonest. They say he lies about condition and about over infalted postal costs, and is generally offensive to people who complain or ask too many questions. But believe me, I have had persoan experience or, and witnessed, far more lies and distortions from big name US resellers like T&T, Titan Gmaes and Tonya's Swap Shop that I have ever seen come out of Cougie. I have bought from Cougie on more than one occasion and one each occasion, got something at a very reasonable price in very good or excellent condition. The one time, many years ago, that I did buy something that turned out to be incomplete (a DMs Design Kit that was missing one of the three booklets), he just refunded my money and told me to keep it.

It's not really a case of finding a company to hate. It's a case of pointing out that they are in the business of screwing buyers. Everyone knows it and a lot of message boards complain about it. But getting stiffed by T&T is like complaining about catching something from a hooker. You know the risk before you enter the agreement, so deal with it.

I'll only explain this once, so I suggest that you pay attention for a change. (I have explained this previously, on different threads hereabouts. The repetition is becoming tedious. I do realize that I'm starting to sound like an apologist for someone, but it gets my hackles up when folks like you ignore the truth to suit your peeves.)

1. "The Partnership" (a corporation, LLC iirc, owned by Bruce Carson of Massachusetts and Jon Huston of Kentucky) pays GenCon LLC a percentage of all auction revenues in exchange for the right to run the GenCon Auction. The profit margin is minimal to non-existent after that license fee is deducted.

2. All items sold in the Charity Auction are donated. Companies might donate things for the implicit PR (high visibility). Individuals donate things just to be nice. (We had a 1st print MM in pretty good shape, frex, that one gamer tossed into the pot.)

3. Moneys collected via sales in the Charity Auction (one partial day only) are not auction revenues. 100% of all proceeds go the designated charity. The Partnership donates the overhead while the room is used for the Charity Auction (and, I presume, can write off that pro-rated portion of the fee they pay GenCon LLC).

T&T buys things at the auction, pays standard prices and fees (no sweetheart deals), and the fees go to The Partnership (like everyone else's fees).

Now I have a question. What 'charity auction' do you claim Troll & Toad is running for a personal profit? (It sure isn't the one at GenCon.) You are publicly accusing that company of fraud and felony crime. I hope you have facts to present if they sue you for defamation/libel.

I don't work for T&T and I don't buy from 'em. Can't comment on the shipping fees. Thus, back to your regular On-Topic thread discourse...

I think this has been discussed before..Cougie doesn't shit where he lives. The bulk (if not all) of his ripoffs occur overseas, it doesn't suprise me you and Al have had good experiences with him....with a better than average chance you'd appear on his doorstep should he rip you off.  If you look at his feedback it appears you are the exception and not the rule.

Very well said Frank, thanks for putting things straight.

One thing few people understand when bitching about T&T running auctions at Gencon and Origins is that without them, there would be NO auction. The so called profit margin for running these auctions is razor thin at best. Other companies have tried running the auctions at Gencon and Origins and they all failed. If T&T hadn't stepped in with the great team of volunteers and auction professionals and collectors there would be no auction in the first place. It would have died years ago.

So for all the bitching and moaning and pointing of fingers folks should stop and consider what it actually takes to put on and run a major auction, and what these conventions would be like without them. T&T may not be perfect (and I too am no apologist for anyone, nor do I work for T&T other than as a volunteer appraiser and auctioneer) but without them none of us would have an auction to attend in the first place.

(Boring disclaimer preface): Speaking strictly of T&Ts eBay practices alone...

FUCK THESE GUYS... can't we finally collectively ignore them? They are a bilious pile of deceitful pricks... a ripe white pimple on the face of the good hobby.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe that they charge $1 to list an item in the auction then keep 20% of the proceeds.

Looking at the numbers from 2007:

Number of Items in the Auction        11,122
Value of Items Sold        $127,562

This arrangement would mean that the partnership makes about $36,634.40 to run the auction.  Given that the con is a 4 day event that's about $9,158.60 per day.  Seems to me that you can pay a lot of volunteers for that kinds of money.  For example if you were paying $10 an hour and the auction ran for 16 hours a day then this could employ 57 people.

As previously mentioned, since the T&T owner is only half of the partnership, anything that T&T buys, only 10% of the sale price gets filtered back into his pocket.

I certainly can't speak to the auction's economics, but according to the Live Game Auction website:

If pre-registered on website - $0.35 per item/lot if for store, $0.85 per item/lot if for live auction If registered at show - $0.50 per item/lot if for store, $1.00 per item/lot if for live auction

15% of the final sale price is deducted to cover auction expenses.

They also charge $1 for each bidder card.

However, I don't think they take any premium or listing fee for the charity auction items.  And I don't know how much they have to pay GenCon as "rent".  Another chunk presumably goes to pay for some of the hotel and per diem reimbursements given to auction volunteers.  So how much profit is there ultimately?  No idea.

I don't get the hostility to Troll and Toad.

Troll and Toad is one of my favorite Ebay sellers and I deal with them a lot.

The other day there was a problem with a deal.  Communication resulted in the problem fixed to my advantage.

Troll and Toad is great about combined shipping and they work with me every time.

Troll and Toad sells products in the actual condition advertised.

Troll and Toad people help run the auction at GenCon and they have someone from their company bid on items.  OK.  Fine.  Whatever.

So they ain't perfect.  OK.  Who is?

If you got snarked by Troll and Toad then talk about that.  Write em another letter or something.

TBH, no problem at all with having some of your staff running the auction, and other bidding on it. It's an open room and everyone can see what's going on, and as far as I'm aware, they realistically can only inflate prices a little if what they are doing is considered shill bidding (which I do not). That side of things seems honest enough, even if their % take increases a little.

<EDIT> Abreviated on advice to keep subject on topic.

But then maybe Frank is right. Maybe none of the reports are right and they weren't in it for the money and they didn't make a profit off of this suposed charity gig.

It seems to be, like Mike says, these guys don't sh!t where they eat. Maybe the further you are from them, the more they'll screw you over, and if you're not in the US you're truely f"cked. Makes good business sense.
