I've come to the tentative conclusion the guy is on the level and I've forwarded payment to him.  I appreciate everyone's input very much, the Acaeum's collective experience with eBay is one of the reasons I love this place.

Anyway, I decided to take the chance.  I've never had a bad experience with eBay.  It seems almost everyone has had a bad experience with a seller or buyer; this may be mine.

If the deal does go south, I will post full details of the transaction here.

Minor update:  I won the auction FRI night (late), Monday morning there was an e-mail in my inbox asking why I had not paid yet.  I responded with a message that PayPal payment had been forwarded, conforming to his "requested" terms, and I have not yet received any acknowledgment of this e-mail or notification the order has been shipped (priority mail, as specified by the seller).

More as this develops.

Sometimes Paypal holds a payment for a while.
I have had it happen to me (in both directions actually) on several occasions...

I remember once buying about eight magazines from a guy who had a very similar inability to figure out how to use his PayPal account. It wasn't that he was a newbie, more like he'd signed up years ago and only used it once or twice a year. Anyway, after tooing and froing, maybe two weeks later, I just told the guy to forget it and file a dispute. I remeber leaving feedback saying "Three weeks on and he hasn't figured out how to work PayPal yet. What a muppet." This case sounds like it might be going down a similar route.

Good luck. Be patient.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

Excellent news.
Please update this when you get the shipment.
Hopefully this will end well...

According to the USPS website, the package was delivered yesterday.  I'm out of town at the moment, so I won't pick it up until Monday.  I thought I would let everyone it was here. If the book isn't as described I will make a posting here but, for now, I will consider the matter closed.

I just realized I never posted a follow-up to this thread.

Item was received, on time and as advertised. Thanks to all of you for your help!

If you're at NTRPG Con this year, make sure and say hello if you see me!
