After a full 28 years of enjoying the D&D world, I think the 2010 Gencon may be my first convention.  Like folks have said... I'd better start saving up now.

Well, if I recall correctly Gail Gygax wrote somewhere she hoped to have a biography    published and Gary told in his interview that he had 'somebody' shopping it with various New York publishers but alas with no results...

Whoever chose "The Father of Role-Playing Games" could've done with a bit more tact though, IMHO. Could've stacked on just as much - or even more - praise without having to deliberately reopen that age-old vein of hurt with not exactly the best of timing, either...

I hear where you folks are coming from, but note that it's a proposed design, not necessarily the final one and I'm not sure what the artist was given for parameters. He may very well have added that titling himself. And regardless of who actually started the RPG movement, I think it would be hard to argue that Gary was the most successful in furthering the hobby for the better, for the better part of two decades. Maybe we'll find out more at Gary Con II.

Also note that this a monument, not a gravestone, and wouldn't therefore include a personal inscription I'd think, so does anyone have a better thought in mind? Just curious.

I couldn't agree more. The idea (saw it on the site referenced above) of a statue of Gary sitting at a table behind a DM screen, with space on the table for people to sit and play beside/with him, it's far more provocative, accurate, and a better tribute, IMHO.

That 'monument' looks extremely cheesy...and the inscription, ugh...I wouldn't travel to see that even if they gave the ticket away.

IMO, if the memorial is not worth going to see; as in, if it doesn't move me enough for me to want to visit; I would ask, what would be the most appropriate way for me to remember him. And the only answer I can come up with is to play.

Is it a sleeping dragon or a dead dragon?  Sorry, bad question.  I take it back.  I agree with the other sentiments expressed here, both the inscription and the image don't seem to do Gary or role-playing justice.

Also, the article states;

I don't see the bust.  Maybe it's on the other side or was edited out.

While I am not the most creative person, I think a giant (12' tall), bronze d20 would have been cool with some of the faces of the dice showcasing information about Gary, his life, his accomplishments, his publications, his image and other relevant information.  And if money were no object, perhaps a dragon sitting on top, wings spread, preparing to breathe or take flight would be cool.  But, I'm sure there are better ideas out there.
