I have about 8 complete sets of the low impact dice. They all appear to be the same type. I also have few holmes sets with dice and they, too, have similar dice.

I even have one set of percentile dice (pink, white) and they appear no different.

But now I am gonna look for that blueish 20 sider.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

Maybe I should rephrase, did the red/pink d20 come in a D&D basic box?

Pink d20 came in twin pack with a White d20.

I don't know much about the history and variety of dice in our hobby, and there seems to be no real history or impirical data online. Would be really cool if someone was to put together something.

I recall seeing a half-white half-pink d20, and someone here bought a special set of dice in one of the Collector Trove's auctions. Again, no real info there either.

Also know of the two greek dice, the 30 sided and it's retinue of books, and Zocchi's little collection of unusual sided affairs (d100, d57, d36, d16, d dice that crumble, etc. etc. ad infinitum).

Anyone care to take up this chalice?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

Ian, are you unfamiliar with Kevin Cook's site @ http://www.dicecollector.com/ ?  Or are you saying that we need to match up the various dice to the sets better?

Didn't know about that site. It's hell to navigate. An RPG related archive on the Acaeum Wiki, or an RPG site would be nice. Not really enough data to make a whole site, but would make a good area of a larget site. Would like to see the history and technical data archived the same way we do TSR and JG, and ToT is beginning to do non-TSR.

Kevin Cook's site is more of an inventory of his dice.  He may have some knowledge of dice history and dice-related contacts.

That is how I bought mine originally. I think they cost $1.50 or maybe $2. The only other place I have seen them together is in Top Secret - and I think only in the first printing.

I have never seen them come together in a Holmes set an I have had dozens pass through my hands. But that is not definitive.

Could someone please tell me how much a set of the dice in the picture would be worth for the 70's?

Yessir, that is correct.  I have a price list in one of my books somewhere that has the price marked out (either by the game store or a TSR employee) and raised, but I think that was just for the Poly set. I'll have to check later on. This is the UK price listing on the back cover of the UK Basic Book. This is the 2nd UK print, the 1st is the same also.

That set with a pair of early GameScience percentiles went for $130 about a month or two ago. But earlier today, two sets (without the pinkies) and a ton of other stuff with it went for $42. And I shed some tears this morning that I forgot to bid on it.

I realize this is mostly a 10-year old thread, but Boot Hill also had the White/Pink Percentile set. So: sold separately, in Top Secret and in Boot Hill.

See TSR Percentile Dice in the 1970s for a pic of a Boot Hill set with the dice. Also a catalog entry from 1977/78 showing the prices as $1.49 for the Polyhedra Set (5 dice) and $0.89 for the Percentile Set (2 dice).

Other posts perhaps of interest:

Dice of the Gods --- the low impact dice in their non-TSR Creative Publications packaging

Marked 20-sided Die --- about coloring the white 20-sider to distinguish 1-10 and 11-20. In addition to coloring half the die I've also heard of making a dot; writing a one; outlining the pre-inked number with another color; or using a razor blade to make a mark. Alternately you can use a control d6 (1-3 = 1-10, 4-6=11-20). Both of these methods (control die and marking) are mentioned in Holmes Basic.

Thanks Zenopus, good to know that there is another one.

Another thanks for finding the pricing. I'm not having any luck finding mine.

Cool post on the Dice marking. That's an aspect of Dice collecting that I really enjoy. GameScience and Windmill Hobbies did alternate inking (usually red and black/white) on their dice sets, I assume by hand during that era.

Thought I'd go ahead and show a picture of a pair I picked up a while back. Black and Gold with Silver/Black inking on one, Black and Silver with Gold/Black inking on the other with some good ol 1970's enamel paint. Probably did a lot to protect them from becoming marbles, which the owner may or may not of known at the time. Definitely a lot of work put into them.
