That seller is $0.01 undercutting bookoutlet1 with their price. bookoutlet1 has a ton of 3.5 D&D stuff priced really weird (just search 'dungeons dragons' and you'll see what I mean). I wonder if this crazy pricing has something to do with some seller of books who has arbitrarily priced the PHB ridiculously high, so everyone and their dog thinks it's worth something and the have-nots are buying them up en masse?

Well, eBay does want to be like Amazon, right?

eBay doesn't show completed auctions beyond 30 days.  Without any historical data, I remain unconvinced that this is anything more than a slight bump, if that.

"Quantity:         More than 10 available"

Yeah... Definitely playing off of people's perceived notion of its value/availability, not the actual.

Hi Guys,

We'll probably see alot of strange things in auction land regarding rpg books this year.

Alot of people are out of a job and are trying to dump every possible thing they can for cash to pay for rent, gas, etc...

I think some people who are out of work are just hoping to get every dollar they can out of auctioning off their beloved game book collection.

Hundreds of thousands of people going out of work every month so...I think the auction houses are going to become glutted with stuff people are trying to dump for cash.

I am looking forward to more items being thrown up on Ebay too.  But I would think the effect of this would be more copies going for a lesser price.  More people seller and less people with cash to buy.

I would agree, I think it is certainly a buyers market if you have a good look around.

OK, I just sold the softcover version of the 3.5 PHB for $38.99 on Amazon.   8O  The retail price is $19.99.

Remember the brief Simpsons flashback when Homer invested heavily in pumpkins only to have the pumpkin market crash after October 31?  He bemoaned his fate.  I don't want to be more of a Homer than I already am.  However, these 3.5 PHBs are difficult to find in used, resellable shape in the DFW and Austin area.  3.5 DMGs and MMs are far more common.

Mind you, add 1/2 an edition and look what you can get (Though it is a deluxe edition - what does it do, roll the dice for you? :D   )

Funny thing about those Deluxe Edition books. That guy is on drugs. I spent some time looking, and bought all three (PHB, DMG, MM) for $80. I then turned around and sold the normal core 3 I had purchased for $60. Net cost, $20 for the Deluxe Edition books. My D&D group like to peed themselves when I told them. Heh.

Honestly, as a non 3.5 ed user, I do not see the value of ANY 3.5 ed material.
Or 3.0 either for that matter.
And I wont be collecting any 4.0 ed now, or even after 4.5, or 5.0 come out later this year either.

I have obtained some of the 3.0 and 3.5 books through larger lots where I was after other items in that listing and after getting the lot, I then re-sold those books.

To me they are NOT collectable at all.
Not in the least.

But I can understand others feeling totally different about them.
Even so, I do not understand how they can be worth MORE than cover price.
Ever.
You all know that WOTCO sold HUNDREDS of thousands of them.

I had some extra time this morning so I looked back through the last week's D&D sales on ebay.  I can say that my next set of sale items will be the DMG/PHB for 3.5 which are languishing in the dusty section of the RPG shelf at home.  3rd edition however seems to be in the confused no-mans land for sales.

I'm chalking it up to folks either buying back the books they sold in anticipation of 4E or they need spares (shelf copies, other players, etc).  Either way, I'm ready to sell my copies and see what they can fetch.

Hallelujah!

With very few exceptions... amen!

3.0 doesn't sell for much.  However, as you noticed, each of the 3.5 Core Books is still selling for $20 - $30 plus shipping.

So much 3.0/3.5 material was released that it's a rich universe.  In contrast, the number of 4.0 products is still small.  3.0/3.5 is like Windows XP; 4.0 is like Windows Vista.

This is the same feeling I get; people are frustrated and disapointed with 4th ed and going back a knotch (3.5 ed).  I do not really think these prices will be sustainable for long since there are thousands of these books in each major city.

Although you never know.  Supply and demand tend to make fools of us all.  If 3.5 becomes the system of choice then there will be an incredible ramp up in prices over the next few years  :) .

Watch the ride at least it will be entertaining. :D

Beyond what you and SC78 have said, the materials used in the Core Books could possibly lead to repurchases.

From what I have seen in the past few months, a lot of 3.5 books have been well-used with severe corner wear, spinewear, and edgewear.
The 3.5 covers lose their gloss quickly through rubbing and are subject to numerous scratches.  The thin, glossy paper used on the covers does not stand up to bookshelves well.
