Mylar is marketed as truly long term.  As Grug Greyskin says, poly bags supposedly should be replaced every 5 years.  Mylar on the other hand will supposedly last a century (100 years).  Lots of "supposedly" statements there   .  But effectively, you are paying about 10 times the price up front for a product that should last 20 times longer and you only have to do it once.  The manufactures I linked to also claim that they diffuse gasses such as oxygen and carbon dioxide 300 times better than poly bags and resist creep 10 times better.  I don't know how important and accurate those last things are.

One thing Grug Greyskin alluded to is that most people who convert from poly to Mylar don't do so all at once due to the price.  I definitely don't use Mylar for everything.  Right now I am pretty much trying them out on my magazine collections.

Personally, I use BCW brand Thick Magazine Bags. They are 9"x10 and 1/2" with a 1 and 1/2" flap polypropylene. The BCW brand is very reliable, and the Thick Magazine Bags are big enough to....wait lemme check...OK they will NOT fit a DMG, but they will fit something as big as the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords ultra module TSR put out there a while back. Personally, I scour eBay when I need more, and buy in lots of 300 bags and boards. It breaks down to near 20 cents per bag and board when you buy in bulk like that, and I either sell what I don't need back on eBay or just keep em for selling or whatever. As far as them only lasting 5 years, I think they just get a bit more brittle as time passes, and I swap em out. Otherwise, they are great!!
