Most of the news and updates about Jordan and the Wheel of Time series I get from http://www.dragonmount.com. I have only been able to get to the site once today to read the latest blog entry from one of his family members and the thousands of condolences from fans. That's all I could get to...all the other pages timed out on me.

I did read the first Chtorr book (I guess I didn't realize at the time that it was supposed to be some huge series) and must admit that I remember enjoying it. Part of that is probably nostalgia, though, as it was my reading material on the first overnight, out-of-town trip that my parents trusted me to take alone.

The Man Who Folded Himself if pretty good; but again was written over 30 years ago. Since then Gerrold has dabbled with his Chtorr series and done cartoon scripts; Lord knows what takes him 10+ years to write a book he supposedly has the outline of finished. Like I said, I'll wait until Book Seven comes out in 2020 before I start this series :roll:

I read the first 7 books in the Wheel of Time series, and then gave it up in disgust. Nothing was coming toward a resolution, the plot kept getting more complicated, there was an ever increasing number of secondary and tertiary characters, and every time I read an interview with Robert Jordan, the number of anticipated books kept climbing. I kept buying the new books, but promised myself not to read or re-read anything until the bloody story was DONE.

Now it never will be. However many detailed notes were left behind, Robert Jordan will not finish the story, and that is truly a tragedy. However much this series frustrated me with its drawn out, never ending storyline, Jordan was a major talent and will be greatly missed.

RIP.

I can think of one other author to add to that list: Robert Adams. His "Horseclans" series never really ended, just sort of meandered on. "Castaways in Time" I think did have an end, but I don't recall for sure. He did have one last series that was to be three books, though only the first two were ever finished before he died.

Castaways in time did have an end; the other time travel series Adams unfortunately passed away before he finished it (only finished two books I think). The Horseclans series went to #18, and I don't think Adams had any sort of end in mind anytime soon; that was going to be his cash cow I think. At the time it was pretty popular, and I think Adams felt it could provide him an income for years to come with a book a year being published to a loyal audience.

I always got that sense, too. It stuck me at the time as following more of the philosophy of the James Bond movie series: "Why actually have an ending? Just keep telling stories."

BTW, if the Wiki can be trusted, it was 18 books in 14 years ... so definitely about one per year. And as much as I make fun of the Wiki, I wish I would have had a list like that back in college when I was looking at copyright pages and trying to figure out in what order the books should be read.

I recall doing something like that when I first discovered Pratchett.

He will be sadly missed. I always loved his writing style, especially his Conan novels. R.E Howard would have been proud.

Doh... I know the series droned on and on but I was waiting for the grand pubah finish! Someone grab a ouija board so we can contact him and finish the series.

This illness was quite a long one. I believe he laid out the story and the family will be finishing the last book in the series.

At least he never bad mouthed Howard like L.Sprague De Camp did. And with the exception of Andrew J Offutt, he was the better Conan novel writer. I still enjoy reading Conan Novels and as you say they were obviously not a patch on Howards original works, they still in my humble view added to the Saga somewhat. I have almost every original Howard work and have read them all dozens of times. I know a lot of Howard purists would never touch any works not completed by himself before his untimely death, but there is also the Howard/Conan fan that still yearns for more, and will God forbid actually rate other ersatz Conan works and not just dismiss them out of hand.

If I'm going to be reading any non-Howard Conan, I'll take Jordan. He did a credible job, I thought, especially considering how many other authors (including some big-name authors) tried and failed so miserably. Harry Turtledove comes to mind ... his "Conan" was just a cosmic joke.

Actually, my favorite Conan writer not named Howard was Karl Edward Wagner. I felt he came closest to capturing REH's headlong, colorful style. The Road of Kings is a good read.

I consider myself somewhat of a Howard purist ... I'll always read REH's words, if given the choice. But, let's face it: the man is long dead. If another author can give me a well-crafted, respectful Conan tale, I'll approach it with an open mind.
