There are many tried and tested methods of tax avoiding. I believe many people in Cornwall used to be quite practiced at some. Unfortunately, they also learned to swing  

Interestingly, the VAT man is one of the few people in the country legally able to kick your door down and remove any property they wish, without a warrant. Nasty!

Lucky they didn't call it a box set once you packaged it for shipment. Surely just because a set of books come in a box doesn't mean the nature of those books changes? Throw in a CD or dice, then you have a game (toy to the casual observer I guess). But when it's only printed material and all 20 years old where's the justification for calling it anything other than exempt - by their own rules? I'm happy to pay tax where it's due (no, let me rephrase - I pay through gritted teeth if them's the rules) but having to pay because they've screwed up and can't tell a book from a food blender or a Persian rug makes me spit. Whatever happens, I'm getting my money back. Don't care if I have to run for PM and change the damn law - I'm getting it back. Third time's the charm for me. No more.

Not only can these guys kick your door down and steal your property they can also cordon off your home and stop you entering it. The government may not be serious about stuff like education and crime but they are deadly serious about tax collecting.

well we didnt have a problem shipping 20,000 JG books from the US to here.

Heres the vital question:

If youre in the UK and buying a parcel size shipment from say the US or Europe, what do you need to tell the sender to do to make sure that you get it via the occasionally-problematic-Royal Mail rather than the always-dreadful-Parcelfarce.?


Ive never had anything stopped by Customs - probably luck - it seems entirely random:  I bought a 4-CD 60$ box set off Amazon.com - came packaged in the usual Amazon box - and they never looked at it. My friend bought the same item from another US source - shipped in a plain envelope, and he had to cough up VAT and duty and handling.
(it was still cheaper than amazon uk though. bastards)
