I'm always partial to some BBQed Pegasus.. whooo!
I like th e3rd ed one too, that eye is cool. Simplistic, elegant.. blah blah blah.
The new one is BLETCH! yucky.. yucky yucky yucky.
It's almost as bad as the AD&D 2nd ed one.. everyone loves the attack of the killer armpit on the Players guide.

My least favourite covers are actually the 2nd ed. ones with the black borders.  Dunno why, but I just hate them.

That said, the one thing I haven't figured out with the 3/3.5 covers is why some of them follow the tiny picture in the centre of a fake old book style, while others (eg. Frostburn, Sandstorm, Stormwrack) go for almost full-cover pictures.

Too much action going on for me, and the color palette is muted.  My eyes want simple and bright images.  1E and 2E were good for that.  3E was too static.  4E looks too action-oriented.  But if the covers attract new players, then, hey, it's all good . . .

Are these covers done by the same artist who did the 3.x D&D miniatures boxes?  I'm thinking of the boxes of minis with a yellow/green/brown color scheme scheme.

OK, I finally spotted the head of the monster on the new Monster Manual.

Until I did, I thought I was looking at the back of a monster wielding a club in his left hand and charging away from the reader.  I knew I had to be wrong, though the thought of seeing a character run over by a monster amused me.

yeah, the black border ones aren't that nice, the cover art is ugly.

and I dunno why 3rd ed didn't have a uniform design, a shame in a way. I quite liked the fake book covers, they were simple and eye catching. I suppose they want the cover to say more about what's inside now, but I dunno.. just looks a bit busy to me. I lik simpllistic designs, the graphic designer part of me screams less is more. That said, the 3.5 book looks better than 3rd ed, the central image is larger, more prominant, doesn't fade into the rest of the erm.. pink? yeah, that pinkish colour was mistake too... hahaha.

looks like the mini art actually yeah. interesting.

one thing i'll be curious to see, if the update the monster art. If thet do I can only hope the artist reads the damned description (erinys from 3rd ed anyone? now tell me, is that angelic looking? feck no! idiots)

I'm not completely against the fake book ones either.  It would have been nice had the pictures been a bit more representative of what was in the book but, had they kept the same look among all books rather than seemingly assigning cover style randomly, it would have produced a consistent looking set of books.  (That's one thing I'll give to the black-bordered books: I may have hated the artwork, but at least they were consistent in their style.)

That said, I get the feeling that the tiefling is on the cover of the 4e players' guide because it's going to become a core race.  I'm mainly curious as to what race they're supposedly cutting from the core PHB to make room for it... :?

Edit:  Wait, I already mentioned that last bit, didn't I?

Seriously, has anyone picked up any 4E promo material?  Any Gleemax (godthatsabadname) swag?

There's one on eBay, for those who wish it: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0156344605

Edit: these ones are cheaper, for the US crowd:
** expired/removed eBay auction **

I dunno, I tried clapping and exclaiming "I don't believe in silly Gleemax brains", but they didn't disappear...

(I hope GenCon will get something better as well.  Those are from some comic con, if the auction descriptions are to be believed.)

Anyone notice how the 4th edition cover mockups (?) look a lot like the covers for 1st Edition MERP, with the banner for the name?  Only thing they're missing is the bright-colored borders.

Compare:

As to 4th Edition Fantasy, it would have to make a RADICAL adjustment away from the crap that is d20 Fantasy to even approach being acceptable.  Since I don't see that happening, it's not entitled to the Dungeons & Dragons name in my mind.

Of course, I'd have to see it first before I make such a truly snappish judgment.  But WotC is noted for its crap, and with 4th Edition, the trend likely continues.

Someone snagged them before I could click Buy It Now. :( It was going to be my first purchase using my recently confirmed PayPal account and eBay account. Oh well. I did want the cute little brain.
