Sea-to-sky-games wrote in 1e 1st print Monster Manual with and without Errata:I'm here reading my 6th print Monster Manual, and reading the foreword and preface. Were there differences in these between printings of the Monster Manual?
I ask because, as the first hardback to be issued formalizing the new game, there's no mention as to what Advanced Dungeons and Dragons actually
is. I would expect a true first print (or even some later prints) to have something to the effect: "this is the first of three volumes that lays out a more expansive way to play fantasy role-playing games. This system of rules is formally entitled Advanced Dungeons and Dragons."
Or did players at the time just know (from friends or Dragon) or assume what the label Advanced Dungeons and Dragons would represent?
I don't recall any changes to the forewards in the books, but the foreward by Mike Carr in 1978 in the
PHB definitely talked about the three intended volumes. A few months earlier in the May 1978 Dragon issue (14), Gary wrote about the other two upcoming AD&D books and it read as though there had been confusion among players and
DM's about what exactly AD&D was versus the Basic Set and what to expect and when to expect the two books.
I'm not sure where else it was discussed to give the public a heads up on the plans.
