My personal opinion is that movies or tv shows based on games just do not work very well.  You do not have the strong identifiable characters like you do from books. Movies from great fantasy and science fiction books can do well if they are developed and produced well.   I just do not see it happening for Dungeons and Dragons.  Even movies based on highly popular video games have struggled.  Prince of Persia, Silent Hill, Hitman, Mortal Kombat etc have been rough in my opinion.  There are a couple of movies based on video games that I have enjoyed but primarily because they have a hot female lead:  Lara Croft Tomb Raider and Resident Evil.  So, if they can enlist Angelina Jolie or Milla Jovovich to play the lead in the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons Cinematic Universe, they may have a chance.          

So what are the stories from R.A Salvatore or Weis and Hickman or the myriad of other authors on the D&D world rich with except a slew of identifiable characters? None of the D&D movies have utilized the wealth of rich stories readily available. Peter Jackson took 3 classic stories and scripted and directed them brilliantly. I won't speak of the Hobbit trilogy as that was sad but LoTR was fantastic. If you had the right visionary to script and direct the movie (based on one of the classic stories) and right cast it could be gold just like LoTR or GoT. I think we all generally agree that if it is campy, based on some generic story from a writer who could care less and a director who sucks, and/or some other mix of stupidity it will flop like all the others have. I don't want a movie based on how the game is played or really anything to do with the D&D game in general. I want to see the author's works on the D&D settings brought to life on film. The Prism Pentad or The Cleric Quintet would be perfect TV series as an example or condensed movie trilogy. My point is that there are stories in the D&D settings that really have nothing to do with gaming or how the game is played but could carry the D&D brand. There are certainly tons of other brilliant fantasy works, not D&D related, that would be awesome films as well. I would love to see some of Gene Wolfe's story brought to film but it takes a passionate visionary that is few and far between. Even then, there are plenty of books brought to movie medium that were done terribly so there is always that.

A D&D movie should be a level 4-7 adventure. Not save-the-world shite.
