Equally, would I consider myself a collector? I visit here pretty much 2-3 times a day, but I wouldn't consider myself a collector. I kind of started, picked up the usual low level modules, the 1st Ed books I didn't have from my time of playing, then sold it all when my life fell apart 2 years ago.

My 'collection' now is just my old books from BitD, the 4 GW floor plan boxes and all of the magazines (TS! and GMPubs) that have my interest. I couldn't call myself a collector, I don't think. More a fan of the game, with an interest in what's going on.

And there's the real problem - we'd need to define "collector" before we could have a fair shot at estimating the number of them out there.

Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

We definitely need to talk about big dollar collectors and small dollar collectors.

I think your numbers are pretty good for big dollar collectors. People who will spend several hundred on something they want up to people who buy whatever they want to fill their collections.

But your numbers are way low for small dollar collectors. Millions of people played D&D/AD&D, Thousands, Tens of thousands from what I understand, still play it in some form. The nostalgia factor is just starting to take hold with a good number of 30something players becoming 40something players. Their idea of collecting may be mainstream late 2nd edition AD&D but they are still collecting and the market for that era of books and modules is stronger than I've seen it in years.

but as jason mentioned there....you would be a "small" collector? i guess thats me too....i come and go with these things, as my mind flits to multiple other things and i still game regular enough too.

my collection is minute to what it once was, but i still collect some things, but that goes with the finances....if i need money, something goes, if i have some spare, i get something i want etc....

but i do believe that as you get older, you change too and your priorities also change, so your passion or need changes with that......

jason is right tho. bout the right for bigger collectors, but the smaller ones, i dont think you can prob put a number on that, because then you start the "what do you define a smaller collector"

I was at Kinkos Copies yesterday, saw 1981 Fiend Folio sitting on a table. A goth-looking kid had photocopied an illo from it, & was cutting it to fit onto a flyer for a rock show. Does he count?
