You're being extraordinarily helpful on all this.
And appropriately so; Acaeum members are the core market for D&D collectibles.

To be blunt just for a moment, we are definitely not accustomed to such outstanding PR from your employer.
I hope the folks upstairs become aware of your 'above and beyond' efforts in this regard.
Perhaps one result may be a greater awareness of the importance of the hobby aftermarket.

Agreeded...

is there anyway to bid while not actually being there?

Thanks all :D  As an avid RPG collector/amateur historian this project has been a labor of love. When I put together the lots it was primarily my fellow collectors I had in mind. Though, I did make sure to include some pure nostalgia pieces. Frank I am glad to hear that you will be one of the auctioneers. I was hoping that would be the case. I am thankful to Live Game Auctions who let us add this to the charity section of their auction. I know time is a real premium, particularly Saturday evening. I would also mention that Gail Gygax said that she and her family are planning to attend.

Cheers,
Curt

Thanks for all of the info, Curt:  you're doing a great job :D

Do you know if we'll be able to bid remotely, or will we need to get a proxy bidder on site, for these items?

Whatever rules normally apply for the Gen Con Auction would be the same. It appears proxy bidding is allowed for some items but I believe you still need to be at Gen Con to participate

Here is a link to Live Game Auction's FAQ:

Thanks Curt.  Here's the relevant FAQ:  http://www.livegameauctions.com/index.p ... emid=3#Q17

FAQ wrote:Can I bid on stuff without being there? I'd rather be gaming...

Yes, you can. This procedure is called "Proxy Bidding". You can't do this for common items, but you can for almost any collectible or special item. First have a staff member bring the item for your inspection (we do the handling, you do the examining). Then show your bidder card and tell us your maximum bid for the item. The information is written on the item tag in a hidden place, and your bid will be part of the action when the item comes up. Your final bid price is typically $1 more than the last "live" bid (sometimes more for high-priced items), so you may get the item for at lot less than your Proxy (maximum) bid. Note that you may be required to guarantee your bid, so have a credit or debit card handy if you plan on Proxy bidding. While both the Origins and Gen Con auctions allow Proxy Bidding, not all auctions do -- check with the auctioneer to make sure.

So, it sounds like you still need to be present and be a registered bidder.  So, if someone attending the con is willing to help me out here, I'd appreciate it? :D

Tips on Proxy Bids:

Know and specify the exact item involved. If you specify something common, a proxy probably cannot be placed in this way; precious personal staff services would be needed to find an item matching your interest, somewhere in the vast stacks awaiting sale. Unique, very special, and/or time-slot-specific items (such as Charity auction) may suffice. Maybe, depending on the item.

Print out some sort of form indicating the bidder number (which a friend will have to fill in for you), the item description in brief, and your maximum bid (eBay style). This should be physically small, not a full sheet of paper, if possible less than half a sheet.

Have a friend get a buyer number and fill that in on all the proxy slips.
Have this friend hail and speak with an auction staffer without top seniority, asking that these proxies be registered, and to check with the bosses for procedures.

Give your friend money in advance to cover your bids, lest he have a heart attack upon discovering that he spent five figures without realizing it. ;>

The above should work until/unless the auction bosses codify the proxy procedure. (waiting on that for 3-4 years now...)

My friends Dave & Gary made a quantum leap in entertainment. Remember them.

Pay my way to the con, give me some of those old NTRPG con gift cards with money still on them, and I'll do all the proxy bidding you need!  I'll even wear an NTRPG con Tshirt and stand up and scream "Another one for the NORTH TEXAS RPG CON! In your face!!!" after I win a bid.

Unless I get paid extra, yes.  So I'm thinking I'll get whatever amount I ask for...

No official plans to my knowledge but assuming it is allowed I will be taking a fair amount of pictures.

If you are negotiating purchases by folks who are attending, UPS could solve some logistical problems.

Bruce (Auction God at livegameauctions.com) says that UPS still has a booth at GenCon, and that they're quite near the Auction Hall.

(livegameauctions.com also says they're not doing any auctions this year... but I know that to be false, so it's prolly just a site update that's a few months late.)
