Well, I promised an update, so here it is.  After much back and forth, the seller offered a $30.00 refund, which I happily accepted.

That was the short version.  This is the long version.

After my initial complaint and the seller's response, I let the issue set several days, then told the seller that I was thinking of requesting a refund and made the first post of this thread.  Based upon the advice of this forum and the seller's non-responsiveness, I opened my case with eBay.  The seller continued with the same line, "I am so sorry.  It is not my fault."  This went on through multiple exchanges on Monday and Tuesday.  I would explain my position and tell the seller what I wanted, either a return with full refund or an offer.  Same answer every time.  I believe that the seller was hoping that I would go away.  Later Tuesday, I told the seller that since they wouldn't agree to a return that I would escalate the case to eBay customer support.  That got their attention.  In an hour and a half they responded with an offer of $30.  I told them thanks and to send it through PayPal.  The next day, I got an response back asking me to close the case because PayPal had a hold on their money and they couldn't make the refund.  That didn't sound right to me, so I looked up the procedure on eBay and told them that I was supposed to wait for refund before closing the case and that they should contact eBay and work out the PayPal problem.  (I don't know whether this was inexperience on their part or a last effort to get out of paying.)  Late Wednesday, I received an official offer through the eBay Resolution Center, accepted it, and got the refund.

I hope I don't sound like a shill for eBay.  With the advice of this forum, the system worked for me.  Thanks.

I would have preferred that the DMG had arrived undamaged.  The hunt continues.

Upgrade from a bubble mailer is to me obviously a box... (if not, please enlighten me)
So is it your assurtion that sellers should provide better shipping than the type that is stated in the listing, yet they should not ask for higher shipping to be paid by the buyer?
Or, does your statement mean while you are paying that you also send enough extra money to cover upgraded shipping?

I simply expect my item to arrive in the condition it was in prior to shipping... regardless of what the auction says... simply because many sellers are unaware of how to ship valuables.  I do not care how long it takes and normally the shipping price quoted is enough to cover media mail well packed... Also I would pay an extra couple bucks to make certain this happens... No problem.

I'm glad it worked out for you!

If you ever end up in a similar situation again, I would definitely recommend that you work through you Visa/MC (assuming that your paypal account is tied to such, and that you're not paying for eBay items with an existing paypal balance).  I went through a horrible experience a couple of years ago with a $1500 2nd printing woodgrain, and the folks on the board were instrumental in helping me to get this sorted.
