None of my book shelves are in direct sunlight; though one is close to a window and the shelves are exposed to indirect sunlight.
Perhaps I need to move that shelves contents to another place.
Some of my high end Boxed Collectables are on that shelf.

Often yes. M.Sigma described what happens when he stores boxes vertically - the contents tend to fall out or fall to the bottom of the box, forcing it open. I just discovered a broken playing piece from one of my boxes, the victim of unrestrained tumbling; plus it can cause the cardboard sides to split.
I sort everything into comic book/magazine bags, so that all the small pieces stay in place.

So, bubble wrap would not be sufficient to avoid this kind of problem? I guess that I will have to go through all my boxed sets to look at that...

Indirect sunlight causes similar effects than direct sunlight. I have no boxed sets on direct sunlight, and one is starting to be insolated :/ I think I will have to move my collection too, in a dark room...

Sunlight is the kiss of death. I always try to position bookcases so that they are on either the west or east outside wall of the house, with an interior wall blocking the other direction. Incidental light from windows on the north and/or south is often impossible to completely eliminate, short of closing the blinds/curtains 24/7/365, which is impractical.

On the up-side, indirect light takes a looong time to have much of an effect on books, and light is probably not your biggest enemy. Damp leading to mold is more insidious, bookworms (i.e., silverfish, roach larvae) are more destructive. Light damage is largely cosmetic.

(BTW, unfortunately the Pacific NW has nothing on NYS for moisture, it's like living in front of one of those mist generators here. Delaware seems like Arizona in comparison.)

Man im glad to be able to start such a good thread.

I cant imagine storing box set vertically allows the books internally to sag that much. In fact i have seen boxes that literally didnt move for 10 years and the internals were immaculate. I agree with the horizontal position being the worst. Even stacking box sets on one another slowly crushes them, in my limited experiemce.

I have started to place the internal books and maps in sleeves with hard backing and i think that would alleviate any gravity like affects on the book.

Sunlight, thats a hard one. I know my WW vampire books dont like it! Ha, ok bad joke! I know some places get a lot of sun, i live in colorado and its sunny all the time. I think the key would be to simply keep them from the light as best as possible. I know thats probably harder said then done in some houses however.

So do some people buy SW sets or books for that matter and not open them? I would feel like my grandpa. He has every John Wayne movie in shrinkwrap but hasnt even seen half of them. Seems lime it defeats the purpose in owning something but you know different strokes for different folks.

Regarding sets stored vertically and having the contents fall to the bottom or bust the box i dont follow that. If the box is bagged and secured and the internals are bagged and secured with a backing i dont see any other issues except accidentally dropping one a fubaring the corner. Man that pissed me off!

I found my old copy of Source of the Nile fairly well crumpled. I put a book (of approximately the sixe of the space) inside the box and put it on my shelf. Over time, it has significantly de-crumpled.
