I keep a couple of IL state tax forms and, on the rare occasion when it comes up, I offer to send one to the seller, mentioning that of course I'll be reporting it as tax paid, come end of year.

The threat that I'll actually file the right forms and obey the law is very effective, and has yet to fail me. Even IL sellers quail at the thought of being legit.

And at first he was like... huh...what tax...?

But then he had it removed.

A guy in Florida recently charged me Florida State sales tax....under a buck and I wanted the item right away, so I paid.

He said that he is not from the US and does not know how state sales tax works.

That makes me think there is a button for Ebay sellers to push.

It is possible that they are pushing the button more often because there have been inquiries about sales tax from official sources.

Don't pay it on any interstate purchase.
