Conversely, this is why Gold or Silver is not that great an investment.  After 10 yrs, you only have the metal you have originally purchased, your appreciation in the long term is solely based on the supply of and demand for gold affecting the price.  A company is generating revenue and growing, so hopefully your investment in 10 yrs has grown in true value, not just price.  However, I would not invest in a single company due to the risk of having all your eggs in one basket.

Can't say I've seen a lot of love lost for her over here... Thankfully there's no state funeral, but no doubt all the rest will be at our expense.

She killed your puppy didn't she. I hate it when government leaders do that.

I find it odd that people think hoarding gold and silver ingots will save them somehow if the whole world economy collapses.  If you're at a point where all civilized government (I use the term loosely)  collapses, what makes them think there will any concept of currency at that point?  Gold and silver only have value while recognized markets trade in them.  No markets, no value.

Gold?  Silver?  You cannot eat them.  They are too heavy to carry around.  You may be able to trade them for a glass of almost clean water in Bartertown.  They are kinda shiny, after all.  They only realistic use for them will be to melt them down into bullets.

I think people figure things are going to go halfway down the toilet and stop before it affects them. I hope this isn't too political an example but I was reading that North Korea just advised people to flee from South Korea and everyone is taking it as blustering. 'Remain calm and the insane leader of North Korea won't do anything'. I think things in Korea are going down the crapper pretty fast and I'm not sure they are going to be able to be stopped halfway.

If currency goes down I'd make sure you have a shotgun and ammo first before stocking up on gold and silver (a month or more of non-perishable food on hand wouldn't be a bad investment either).

Different strokes I guess. Every negative sentiment here about Thatcher, I feel 10x that towards Obama.  But he's immensely popular overseas.  It's all perspective.

The purpose of holding metals is not to invest, but to stave off depreciation, something very few stocks are able to do. Stocks are pegged to the dollar, and the dollar is pegged to nothing. The dollar is only as valuable as its percieved value in the market, and when the government can print as many as they wish, whenever they wish, and banks can invent as many as they wish whenevr they wish by lending money, the value of the dollar and anything pegged to it can only depreciate. Value is only introduced into the system to stave of depreciation of the currency, by getting other countries to exchange the dollar of commodities and services. A country needs to obtain and own more and more 'stuff' in order to stave off deflation of its currency, and it pays for that 'stuff' by printing more bank notes and giving them to other countries. The problem I see is, what happens if you invest your $1000 in Apple or UPS and in 5 years your $1000 stock is worth $1500, but $1500 only buys you a week's groceries?

In such a situation, and I'm sure we all doubt anything like that will happen in our lifetimes, but in such a situation, I would imagine Mr A of ABC Food Distribution Ltd., who finds himself with a warehouse full of Baked Beans and Kanga Chunks, would not be looking for $ to exchange for his much sought after resource. He cant move his resource, nor can he consume it all himself, and he's aware of its value, so he'd probably be looking for shells for his shotgun, small comodities he doesn't already have (gasoline/medical services/etc.) and a portable form of wealth that is universally known that he can exchange for other goods in the future.

If I had $1000 to invest, I'd be stupid to leave it in a bank. Money depreciates by 2-4% a year even with bank interest, so my $1000 is getting smaller and smaller year on year. So my other choices are to invest in something that has a low chance of depreciating (CZ:UWs/Rembrandts/Silver teaspoons/whatever), but that requires specialist knowledge, or invest in stocks and shares, but that requires a modicum of specialist knowledge, a payment of fees to those who skim off the top, and a trust that the dollar is stable and will not decline over the next decade.

It's a tough call, but IMO, gold and silver are more about placing funds in a stable state, and less about creating an asset that provides a return. Insurance rather than passive income.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.
