Well, it's been well-known for a while now that something killed off the dinosaurs, and suddenly. What the article is claiming is that some scientists have gone over the decades of accumulated research data on the subject and concluded that the leading hypothesis, an asteroid impact, is correct.

But that is common knowledge. The asteroid and subsequent crater in the Yucatan is accepted as being the cause of the cloud of ash etc that caused the black out, etc, etc.. Just seems another waste of funding on research over a large period of time.

I suspect the next 20yrs of study will show that dinosaurs were grey in colour typically and had bad breath... :lol:

potentially more amusing, as although his goods aren't counterfeit (to my knowledge) they may often go 'missing' so could be even more serious. However with his 3 pseudo-nyms all still selling at the moment, he is spreading himself rather thin and leaving himself open to a bigger slip up.

I am not saying this is right or wrong. But I would say "assumed" this is correct is what the scientists are suggesting.

Science has a funny way of "concluding" things that tend not to actually be "concluded."

And NO, I am not a conspiracy theorist!

Have you ever seen the Saturday Night Live skit with the Jeopardy-like game show called "Common Knowledge?"

The joke is that on "Common Knowledge" the correct answer is not what is true but what is commonly believed to be true:

Q: What is the capital of Kansas?
A: Kansas City

"Common" scientific knowledge is often more complicated than what is commonly believed. This is particularly true when scientific information comes to us in the form of headlines from dodgy news articles that we didn't actually bother to read anyway.

Remember that no reporter ever got his article published by writing headlines like, "No New Information About Dinosaurs."

Surviving the hit to his helmet was good fortune.

Piloting the damaged helicopter and bringing his crew in safe is the real story.

One was the fortunes of war. The other was skill and professionalism.

The big winners were the film crew, who caught the story first-hand. (And...you know...everyone else who pretty much...lived.)

Sure. That's exactly how science works and always has -- incrementally. As a group, scientists continually review previous discoveries and combine those findings with new research data. Over time old alternatives are rejected in light of this new information. Each intermediate point where near-consensus is reached can be considered a conclusion. (Not unlike how we do printing chronologies, actually...how many times have we screwed those up?)

In this case, the exact claims are a bit unclear as we're only looking at a poorly written newspaper article, not the actual findings from the study. I have to assume the scientists found some sort of compelling evidence that ruled out some or all of the remaining alternative hypotheses, or there wouldn't be any news at all. The asteroid impact hypothesis, while compelling and considered "well known" by some, was certainly not the only hypothesis for the KT extinction. Perhaps now it is, but the article is useless as it doesn't tell us why they'd come to that conclusion.

Well, to be fair, if Thorkhammer is posting all over the place about his new releases maybe he should tone it down to just one or two specific locations that are specifically for it. No need to post everywhere about the same thing...it can get really redundant and annoying. But I really have no idea if that is the case though...I am just assuming that he is based on the comments in the thread.

On the other hand, that particular thread is why I dont post on DF. Most of the time things like this can be handled with a PM from the moderator if there are enough complaints. No need to start a whole new thread about it. And although I dont spend a whole lot of time over on DF, I can pretty much sum up that the poster that started the thread is a real classy guy. Apparently he thinks he is right about everything and everyone else is for the most part is wrong. Not to mention that he gets banned for pissing the moderators off on a regular basis. But the rules on DF are different, I guess you are only banned for a short "cooling off" period and then they let you back on. Bleh....whatever.
