Great idea Ben! Although I believe people should stop using the word, "community", in association with this project as clearly, given the arbitrary fifty run limit and a waiting list (you ARE joking, right?), this has nothing to do with community and everything to do with exclusivity - at the expense of at least seven legitimate Acaeum members. That, in my mind, sucks. "I wonder if The Acaeum as a group would be interested in a commissioned work by the artist Erol Otus?" The Acaeum as a group? Not quite, more accurately a group from the Acaeum. Changes the whole principle, does it not? No, I don't want one of the prints, just surprised to see seven 'members' singled out as being slightly less equal than the rest.

"Slightly less equal" really means "slightly slower to confirm interest" and nothing more than that.

No one else has viewed the waiting list as a way of singling out people.  :?:

If BenJoshua (or BadMike, or PaulKM, or anyone) wanted to commission some uber-exclusive artwork, then he could have done that and kept it all to himself.

Hi JG, how goes it? True enough, the distinction has been made based on log-in timings. And I guess a few may drop out so fifty might well prove to be a good estimate in the end. All I'm commenting on is the abuse of the term, "community", and of course everything I say is purely my opinion. I've no doubt any number of members here could commission their own project, but that would be a private matter and not allegedly related to the Acaeum "community".

I do see your point.  To me it's a semantic difference, as the limited nature of prints/posters/whatever was assumed from the start.  Hundreds and thousands can't be made available in an open-ended agreement, as few of us have the funds for such a project.  I certainly don't.

Nothing I say is more than my opinion, either.   Apart from my not having money.  :D

This is completely accurate. There's no solid counter argument to this. There are some really good BS arguments here though 8)
1) "This isn't an investment but we need to limit it to 50 cause then why not print 500,000,000,000... everyone in China will be ordering these things if we don't cap it at 50!"
2) "All the people on the waiting list were 2-3 days too late to see this thread cause were not even really started with this concept yet and the only thing we know for sure is that there are going to be 50 copies available."
3) "This is a collectable piece but not to be seen as an investment type of deal so were limiting it to 50 copies and nobody gets to order two of them cause this is just a fun community type of project and not a manufactured rarity sort of deal."
4) "We can ship 50 of these things but who's going to want to ship 55 of them? Anything over 50 is impossible to handle."

Didn't someone say there would be nay-sayers and people frustrated over this process? I am fortunate I made it onto the list, but there are many other Acaeum-related things I have missed, sadly, from GenCon last year to Doug's margarita barbeques, to Al's GenCon game this year (it was for repeat players only and I DIDN'T MAKE IT ONTO THE LIST)

Yes, it's a shame there will only be 50 prints, but who knows, I might miss out on another Acaeum project myself! There have been a few weeks where I haven't logged onto Acaeum at all.

Can we dispense with the wild conspiracy theories?
megnelwil wrote:this has nothing to do with community and everything to do with exclusivity - at the expense of at least seven legitimate Acaeum members.

Is the concept of "first come, first served" really so foreign?  Those most interested in supporting the project responded first.  These same responders typically visit the Acaeum several times a day.  Yes, a few stragglers didn't make it in time -- that's called "life".  Or should we have a referendum of all 1300+ Acaeum members and see how many want copies?
Tharizdun wrote:This is completely accurate. There's no solid counter argument to this.

Oh?  How about "I'll gladly give up my spot if someone actually on the waiting list bitches about a lack of community."  So far the only people I see complaining are one guy uninterested in the project, and another one already on the "registered interest" list.

I never set out to take a copy from another collector's hands, just to make sure this project is a success.  I believe Rakeesh sah Tarna was even willing to underwrite a few copies, in the unlikely event that less than 50 people pay up.  So please don't suggest that there's a lack of community unless you're willing to do something similar.  That's simply untrue.

It's limited to fifty copies to ensure that most of the people that say they want one will actually pony up the dough in the end, and that number is spot on.  The organizers don't want to be left holding the bag for hundreds or thousands of dollars, and who can blame them.  It's also to ensure that the organizers can handle the scope of the project, as they've never done anything like this before.

I think this post is worth highlighting (50 names - but over 50 copies if the handful are allowed multiples - that might need clarifying)

[Centre Stage]Didn't someone say there would be nay-sayers and people frustrated over this process?

CSH is right here - but what can you do? Is there a fairer way than 1st come 1st served? That's a bit of a rhetorical question really, but I think that it's important in something like this that lines are drawn and limits made clear. At least from the outset everyone kind of knows where they are. (Even if this is still, presumably, very much 'up in the air')

Of course there is not necesarilly a good reason for limiting to 50, but then there are probably an equal amount of good reasons for limiting it to 57.

I made it in there toward the top of the list, not because I'm great or a pillar of the Acaeum community or a member of the inner circle or have  a massive collection, or am related to Dave Arneson, or whatever else but because I happened to say 'count me in, when this thread was in it's infancy.

This is perhaps the sort of thing that does divide communities - this will potentially get nastier before it gets nicer, but then no-one ever said community had to mean we had a 24/7 love-in! :D

We should all remember that the desired outcome of all this is a cherished addition to our individual collections - possibly some will treat this as a commodity to be traded or profited on - there is nothing we can do about this, only say that such action would be a shame, and not befitting of the spirit of the whole endeavour.

I for one hope it goes ahead - but if it doesn't I won't lose sleep.

Carl

(edit - I was typing this so didn't read what Deimos had to say - thank you D, I shouldn't have bothered   8O )

I think this was clarified and the list reposted - one per customer.

Hi,

tho there is some truth in the fact that those who visit here every day are more likely to have seen the posting and expressed an interest.

And if youre on holiday or your PC broke, well, unfortunate.

I notice 50 people on 'the list', but only the first 40 can receive prints if you're sticking to the limited print run of 50 copies. I think in this situation you may need to consider limiting each purchaser to a single print.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

:?:   Is there any reason not to simply require pre-payment..?  That way, no one's stuck with orphaned copies, and everyone who wants one, can have one?

(As #51, my dog in this fight is obvious - I was away for a couple of days and missed the post... and I'm a big boy and shall own that...      )

Heh ...if there is sufficient interest those who are on the waiting list should just break away and contact Otus to do their own separate commission.  It is not that complicated.  Especially if the number on the waiting list is a smaller number like 25, then that commission would be more exclusive and limited, and each contributor would have a better 1/25 chance to own the original too!

Sorry couldn't help myslef.

Cheers!

While I would be one near and dear to P.T. Barnum's heart and gladly prepay, I think there are many, MANY people on this site who still twitch when they hear the word "preorder".  The last big preorder announcement didn't go as smoothly as it could have.

My concern with the preorder is the cost probably can't be estimated yet.  There will be the artist fee, printer fees, mailing fees and supplies, etc.  It would be a huge pain in the arse to collect $50 a head and then realize you need an additional $1.06 to cover sturdy envelopes.  And while I absolutely wouldn't want to be involved in planning, I would hate for those folks to take a bath.  The hope at least at one point in the past, was to make this more than a one time thing.

Just a few very general observations....

The self styled politburo....errr, committee...has decided that it behooves us not to get into flame wars, point by point refutations, or long-winded explanations of why things are the way they are.  If you have a legitimate question we'll jump on and answer....if it's just a long list of complaints, we'll probably ignore it.  Fact is, if you want news from the "horses mouth" so to speak the best time to catch most of us is Deimos' Friday Night Chats, right before we retire to the Star Chamber to decide the fates of the unfortunates....wait, that came out wrong....

It has been decided only one print per customer to both cut down on any possible speculation and to get the prints into more hands.

I have no doubt that when time finally comes to collect the money, there will be at least one or two no-shows.  So have faith those of you on the waiting list....

Pre-orders is something we want to avoid, for most of the reasons Avurax states.  Also, no one among us wants to hold onto that much money for that long (we are shooting for an end of year mailing) And remember, NOTHING has actually been decided or done yet on an official basis (lots of unofficial stuff has been taken care of).  Heck Otus might still tell us he wants to give up drawing and circumnavigate the globe and leave us high and dry.

As stated before, this is a first try at this sort of thing...we don't want to get expectations sky high and have them crushed.  Particularly since we aren't even sure right now if we are going to be able to cover shipping through the price, if we collected money now THEN came back several months later to get more money, it wouldn't look or smell right.  We want to avoid that sort of experience (along with the inevitable "Is it done yet?" chorus that will pop up once money is collected).

If you want to look at a case where expectations have turned into outright hostility (over a FREE item, mind you) then look no farther than the release of Len Lakofka's L4 on the Dragonsfoot boards...we want to avoid that sort of experience here.

Will the result be R- or X-rated?
That will affect its eventual placement in the house
(not to mention collectability & value)...
