It's a user preference ... just hit "customize search" on any page of search results and it's possible to set up exactly what you want to see from your eBay searches.

(Is "Best Match" going to be the new default? I'm still at "Time Ending Soonest" and I haven't made any changes lately)

This guy here really did his research to answer that for you, Al:

http://www.auctioninsights.info/decodin ... match.html

Great article. Note again how this development appears to be a way to remove smaller sellers from the picture ... it's hard to sell anything if your items always end up on the second page of the search results. OTOH, the one part of Best Match that eBay has revealed publicly is the part that penalizes sellers with terrible scores ... hi, Cougie! Image ... so I guess it can't be all bad.

Most of the algorithm will remain a secret forever, of course, so we can look forward to months and months of sellers playing around with keywords and other tricks to "please" eBay.

Thanks Xaxaxe for the fantastic link !!!!  :D  :D  :D

I particularly liked the section on punishing bad keywords.  I wonder if VGC will end up as a good or bad keyword? ;)

Hello Mrs. Cleaver, Theodore.

Gee, Mrs. Cleaver ... That certainly is a lovely dress.

Made my first sale on half.com today!  Whooop!  With not much to do next week except for price items and ship them out, I'll probably add quite a bit more of my cds...perhaps close down my ebay CD section down completely. I even added a few hardbacks I had that I figured wouldn't do that good on Ebay....

Check the classifieds tonight for a sale I'll have on my Ebay stuff this week only....basically knocking the shipping down quite a bit if you purchase anything from me off-Ebay and through the Acaeum or Dragonsfoot.

Snap, I've just closed my store down too and I really hope a large enough number of small sellers do the same so eBay reaps just reward for its greed. I was quite proud of that little store but hey, not to the degree of throwing money at it. Now that eBay will be relegating my listings to the back-of-beyond I can't see the point of paying listing fees to carry stock month after month whilst the resale margin dwindles away. eBay thinks it can survive just on Powersellers alone and I think the eBay-heads are dead wrong - YET AGAIN. On a level playing field I was doing rather well. But now I'm just a standard eBay userID again, and (really) it already feels pretty good. I'll throw away my stock in auctions over the coming months, perhaps I'll even get lucky and make a few quid. Valuables I might put up on Amazon and see how that goes. Whatever, it will be more fun that simply processing shop orders, which in the end I kind of got tired with - never the people, just the inventory. Plus I'm buying for myself again now, rather than for resale. Feels better. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to come across as one of those reformed smoker types, but it feels pretty good to not have to worry about who ordered what and when does it have to be delivered and how do you write "DO NOT BEND!" in Polish... And I'm not into "Let's all kick the Powersellers", either - after all, I'm still one myself as eBay won't cancel my subscription for some reason - standard incompetence I'm hoping. No, this is a case of trying to find the silver lining, and I think I have - from my point of view and circumstances anyway. I also think it is perfectly acceptable for any eBay member to simply say, "Hey, I like these changes". Me, I think the changes stink to high heaven but horses for courses.

Best thing to come out of eBay then? Acaeum and Yog-Sothoth. Some things don't change because they don't need to. eBay maybe should take note.

Sorry to see a lot of good smaller sellers will go your way, man.  Obviously I'm heavily caught up in the life and won't be letting go, but everything you described is part of my everyday routine except now when an asshat doesn't pay and it takes 10 days to get a refund or charges back on his paypal account or leaves me bad feedback I won't have a helluva lot I can do about it...luckily 99% of the dudes I've dealt with are pretty nice guys, even when I make a mistake if I email them and let them know most the time it's "Hey, no problem".
Anyway at least you gave it a shot sorry to see you go....

eBay seller revolt to last a week
Posted Feb 17th 2008 11:10AM by Douglas McIntyre

The uprising against eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) by its sellers is now scheduled to last an entire a week from February 18 to February 25. According to CNNMoney, "Sellers say eBay's new policies are likely to cost them more money, but what's really inspired an outpouring of wrath is an adjustment to eBay's feedback system: sellers will no longer be able to leave negative commentary about their buyers."

Under the new system, egregiously bad behavior by buyers will not be shown to other customers coming to the auction site.

The action does not come at a particularly good time for the big online auction company. Its shares have fallen from a 52-week high of $40.73 to under $28, fairly near their period low. Investors do not need another reason to be tempted to sell the stock.

Why management made the move is still something of a mystery. Obviously the company believes that over time it will make more money with the new system, but the bad PR and loss of some business from sellers may offset that.

A company that is already in the dog house with Wall Street would be better off waiting for good news and a recovery in its shares before making a move which risks harming its top line.

Lots of funny stuff on the Ebay boards...ebay just took down over 60 pages of people complaining about the new rules and urgingin others to join the boycott.  Listings are down an average of 3 percent, which is far more than I figured (I was thinking, maybe 1 percent if we wer lucky).  Anyway looks like the Boycott people are really getting the pub they need, don't know if it will do any good, but everyone seems to be paying attention....

BTW, one good result of the new policies...I don't see how this idiot will be able to do business on ebay anymore in any way, shape or form: Our old buddy Creep1962.  His feedback is astonishing...he's managed to make Cougar look like a respectable seller.  I mean, you actually have to try to be an asshat to get stars this bad:

EDIT

Thanks for the fix Al!

I told all my regulars about the strike and have at least one guy deciding to delay sales of his stuff for a week.  No one's complained either, which was surprising since these changes appear at first glance to be tilted toward the buyer.  All in all, this is better than expected. :)

BTW, I just sold $700 worth of stuff off ebay to Aceaum members since last night.  Nice not to have to pay the ebay fees associated with this!  And thanks to the members.  What great people, maybe I'll just shut down the store now and take the rest of the week off!!!

Not pretending this will change anything...this entire idea is Donohoe's baby, and he's going to ride this horse to the bitter end.  But sure feels nice....

This one slipped by me ... eBay is lowering fees for media-realted items?

http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200802111000332.html

I find this very interesting; I would love to have attended the meetings where the current crop of eBay geniuses realized the huge number of media listings that were going to Amazon, other sites, or maybe just plain-old garage sales or other non-eBay venues.

Note also that those are just lowered insertion fees ... eBay's new ankle-grabbing final-value fees are unchanged for all categories.

Thanks Mike, will still be around though minus the shop. Don't think I'll be able to ditch this collecting bug anytime soon.

Has anyone noticed another eBay revenue stream developing over recent days? They are now making close on 0.05c on the dollar in UK to US Paypal currency conversions. This is on top of their fees, of course. Every which way you look, eBay has its hand stuck out. This is another area where their new buyer-is-God policies might backfire if international trading burns off.

Oh, they've been doing that for a while now.  During the brief period when the Canadian dollar was a few cents over the American, they were still doing conversions at an exchange rate where the American dollar was worth more.  Probably made 5-7 cents per dollar on every transaction that went through.

Yes they have been doing that for quite a while... there is a section on the payal account that allows the conversion to be done through your own bank/credit card instead of paypal.. the up side is you get the real current currency conversion rate the down side is that you don't know exactly what it is going to cost you in your own currency.. trust me if you are paying in a different currency other than your own set it so paypal DOESN'T do the conversion and your bank DOES...

Brette:)

Didn't know about that option.  I think I shall now go and find it.

Thanks for the tip. :)

Absolutely, that's a tip that ought to be publicised far and wide - I had no idea either.
