So why not just cut their fingers and toes off?  Burn them cigarettes or put a piece of glass in their genitalia and smash it like the Chinese used to do?   Why the need to limit it yourself to making up fancy explanations and names to validate doing it? Just do it, right.

Again, its not about popular opinion, its about doing whats right and all the things that come along with that.

Brian, we are just on opposite sides of a debate. I don't have a problem with the methods used by the CIA to protect our country. I do think it is right. Others do not.

But the fact is that we do not cut fingers off. I think they are doing it right. We have not been hit since 9/11. I just hope it continues.

Sorry, Barsh, but I just don't buy into that perspective on iota.  The more relevant and revealing fact is that we DID get hit on 9/11.

[quote="Aneoth"]

I do not get this post at all.

As in most posts I made the point with a view to have a discussion. I see no relevance to the Jews or Holocaust.

I only thought it would be interesting to discuss such a topical point with the anniversary approaching. There is some 'evidence' that gives an argument that it could have been staged with overlays of the area on the moon, matching that of desert areas in the US.

There is also the lighting issues, shadows, flag fluttering, lack of anything visible left behind (so far), the power needed to land and relaunch the lander, the computing power available then compared to now and the fact we haven't been back since.

All of these points can also be disproven with valid scientific answers, but as per my original post, a conspiracy theory thrives on a lack of real evidence but also the modern power of the internet makes everyone an expert to prove or disprove anything.

I just thought it might be worth a few lines to chat about, but as it appears so pointless, you may wish to ignore it and discuss the rights and wrongs of torturing people (whether innocent or not)

That's one of the several fatal flaws in the argument though.  Torture in any of its various forms has never ever been proven to get reliable answers or workable intelligence.

According to who? That statement is not provable (one way or the other). I certainly cannot say torture works - I have never performed it and I have no knowledge therein. But that does not make the opposite true, either.

And by the way. If water-boarding is out the door, I guess we will have to stop using it in training. Because we do. It is is used by the Army and I suppose the Navy uses it in Seal training, have no idea about the Air Force (but I am sure they use something similar in their E&E course).

Regardless of my opinion, the door has swung and the president has made his call. He will sign the order and that will be that - on the surface at the very least. But he has stated the government will be transparent and I, for one, will believe him.

I don't follow.

We were basically ignoring the threat of Islamic radicalsim and they killed thousands of Americans.

It took that event to "wake" up our government. They responded and to my recollection, I haven't seen an attack on our soil since. People can disagree with the response, but the fact remains: no attacks on american soil. I am good with that.

Well, here's my perspective (and I totally respect yours).  Had 9/11 happened under a Democratic president labeled, as usual, "soft on defense/military", you can bet the fault would have landed squarely in their lap.

No attacks on United States soil before then either after 1945. How much torture was done then?

Howdy,

Then you'll have no problem when the enemy tortures our fellow citizens abroad and "your men" either. Right? And how will you justify punishing them for such war crimes when you yourself are guilty of it?

Honor is when the enemy resorts to cowardly tactics and you don't.

The good guys don't torture.

Good is determined by who wins... it is hindsight that decides it was "bad." That's how all atrocities happen. The Inquisition. The Crusades. Me...

Technically, any attack on a US Embassy is an attack on American soil.  And I do believe there has been attacks on embassies since 9/11.

I don't blame anyone in the U.S. Bush or Clinton. I blame the terrorists.

I am not one to blame the police for not catching criminals.

But you are correct, there are people who love to blame...I just am not one of them.

I am not certain if Bombadil is referring to "blowback" or not.  The United States are Europe are certainly not making any friends in the Middle East; we are buying their loyalty in Iraq, which has proven effective, but that does not seem like a stable situation.

A scientific experiment would be required to prove the effectiveness of torture/amateur interrogation, so that's not workable.  According to professionals, who are biased, bad intelligence has been gained from amateur interrogations.  False confessions and self-serving information are often the result.

The World Trade Cener was bombed in the early 90s by Islamic terrorists.

I know I am not including all the Americans killled overseas in the span of a just a few years (Kobar Towers, Embassies, DD Cole, etc), but my memory can be faulty.

Rightly or wrongly, I don't think the majority of Americans consider overseas attacks to matter that much.  And I doubt that most remember the WTC bombing of the 90s.

I blame both the politicians (less) and the terrorists (more).  There's plenty of blame for everyone.

They do it already. American soldiers have been tortured and murdered after capture by every opposing force we fought. I am not talking about American spies, but uniformed soldiers. Terrorists are not uniformed soliders.

And please note my distinction between terrorists and soldiers. We do not torture soldiers. I was very clear on that.

There is no cowardly tactic in war. You win or you are defeated. I would employ every dirty trick in the book to bring my men home. In fact, we train daily on how to defeat the enemy with unconventional warfare.

This thread has been civil so far.  Wow.   8O

I give it another few hours before these lyrics come to pass:

Somebody told me that you were so stupid
But i didn't believe them
But now-woo I believe them

Somebody told me that you were so stupid
But i didn't believe them
But now-woo I believe them

Everybody's stupid
Everybody's stupid
Everybody's stupid but me

And I'm cool
--- Strongbad
