They even blew out the regular shrink buyer we all know and love and he usually goes big. There was a noteable missing party in the bidding, but the $500+ ends on some of the 2 packs were LOL.I agree, the two packs were overbid by like double!!

To my opinion, the rarest pack is the one with the dungeon masters screen. The Gamma World pack is not common, but it ended not very high in comparison to AD&D packs. I do not scan Ebay every day, but the Dungeon Masters Screen pack does not come so often. Nevertheless, $1225 for this one is just unbelievable. Some packs got more reasonnable prices but the easiest to find packs such as the L1/L2 should end below $150. I think I bought mine even below $100 one or two years ago. It is the easiest to find at reasonable price. $521 for this one is just irrealistic ! As said, 10th anniversay packs are not easy to find in a so nice condition, so perhaps one or two collectors wanted to get the whole series in one shot. I would have been happy to buy some packs missing in my collection, but not at this wild price.

These are not on my radar for sure, even if the price was much lower. The prices paid were so ridiculous, I was laughing as I recorded them...~throwi

Don't be surprised if these prices stay consistant over the coming years!!

throwi wrote in Old Candidates: Silliest Auction Prices of the Year:No doubt they are rare, but to echo a previous statement, it's for the SW and the yellow piece of paper. Purist collectors no doubt want them (and I can appreciate that), but when the individual items in the set cost less than 10% of these set's final prices, it's hard to get motivated to open the wallet. These sets are, at the moment, intentionally missing from my collection list of needs. I'd rather spend that money on the Gazetteers or Planescape sets I'm missing.

I'm no where near those items on the "collecting fringe" yet, with my focus on the core items from OD&D, D&D and AD&D. If I can ever get to that point, I'll need to assess how much further I'm going to go. I suspect I'll keep going, and have to be willing to pay a bit more (or lots more) than I've had to in the last few years. Even now, with about 50 or so items left in my list, I'm having to spend more for rarer items. It's not like I need B2s now. ;-)Thanks for your perspective. I'm not at that point yet so it's hard to wrap my brain around it.~throwi
