Bishop, now a University of Alabama professor, and her husband James Anderson met and fell in love in a Dungeons & Dragons club while biology students at Northeastern University in the early 1980s, and were heavily into the fantasy role-playing board game, a source told the Herald.

"They even acted this crap out," the source said.

Police seized two Dungeons & Dragons books from McDermott's Haverhill apartment after he shot seven co-workers to death on Dec. 26, 2000.

Talking about the D&D Video Game she played...

The video game did not go to the store and purchase the gun. SHE went there, pulled the gun out and shot these poor people - the video game did NOT. SHE chose to do this - the video game did not. Allowing these people the excuse is sad and demeaning to the families of the victims. Call a nut a nut. Take some damned responsibility for your actions. It is just one more excuse for the psychotics and their lawyers to lay blame where it doesn't belong. If you are fool enough to believe that she murdered these folk because of a video game you belong in the nut house!

That would be aking to saying, "The discovery of two pairs of handcuffs at the home of suspected pedophile, Mr Spanky, indicates that Law Enforcement are contributing towards the sexual abuse of children." I wonder if Mr McDermott played pool, or wore sneakers? People who play pool and wear sneakers always strike me as being mass murderers too.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

I expect Ebay to halt sales of "violent, demonic games" such as D&D pretty soon. Violent video games soon after that. And eventually any electronic medium that you can use to watch movies that contain violence, vulgar language, and R-rated sexual content. Hardcore porn though....that's still ok. :roll:

Based on that premis, they should also stop selling toys and childrens clothing, adult clothing and footwear, motot vehicles and kitched utensils. These are all things used by every convicted pedofile and child murderer in the States, and presumably eBay are ignoring the fact that their sale of these goods could fascilitate these crimes.

eBay may not wish to sell certain publications, but I question their motives to stop encouraging the sale of books, but to continue to sell materials that can be used to lure, abuse and murder children.

Interesting.

Looks like WOTC has diagnosed their problems and are making moves to rectify with:

a) A lower-price entry level product for 4th Edition.
b) A deliberate reach back to retro style for veteran gamers.

It looks to me like they have been checking out the products of their small competitors.

Exactly.

As I understand it, people bought 4th Edition but they are not playing it.

In order to bring back their core audience who actually play D&D, they obviously have recoginized the significance of the greater OSR community.

Also, they must have realized that junior high kids are not going to try out a game that requires a $100 initial buy-in.

I'm one of those people who bought it but doesn't play it. Because I tried it and didn't like it. And I wanted to like it, but it just didn't do it for me.

I don't want Wizards to go under or D&D to die out. I want to see the game keep going and be commercially viable but I just can't get into the new rules 4.0 at all. And that seems to be a very common theme among gamers I've talked with.

Slapping a classic Elmore cover on the rulebook isn't going to change that.

D&D won't go under, even if WoTC went under. In order for D&D to disappear you have to get rid of all the players. Battletech, Runequest, Traveller, Paranoia, Cthulhu, etc. They are all still here even though the companies who produces some of them are now either gone, or in a different management form. Companies do die, and some would probably benefit from doing so; but games only die if the players don't play the games.

The new boxed set looks like an awful idea. A bit insulting to customers as well. Would be good to see someone review the product whithout a predisposition to 4E or funding from WoTC. An independent review from someone with no bias towards Pre-2E also. You can't really expect a magazine to present an unslanted informative review, but I'm hoping a good online review appears.

I'll be interested in this for a few reasons, the first being the fact that it's a basic set. I started on Holmes & still see it as the definitive form of D&D; my personal projects usually involve the-character-sheet-is-the-RPG minimalism; teaching my son to play has occupied much of my gaming time in recent years.

The 2004 Basic Set is in my opinion the absolute best. You get everything you need to start the game off right & develop it on your own without ever buying another product. Which is probably why the approach has never been tried before or since - basic sets usually give you a truncated version of the game to encourage buying more. I suspect this usual approach often shoots itself in the foot, by delivering an initially unsatisfying experience which only discourages further purchase.

If this new 2010 basic set is any good, it could be an easy way to buy into 4e. Like it or not, 4e is here, & being able to join a game will increasingly require it. The local game stores sponsor 4e games, some of my friends have adopted it, & new players I meet in the future will likely use it.

Finally, the retro box. This is something I've been speculating on for a couple of years now, but have always been told it's impossible. I see it as inevitable that much of the old art will eventually be reprinted, quite possibly in the pages of new D&D product. Just as the standard version of Monopoly has settled on a 1930s look, D&D is rooted in the fantasy art of the 70s & 80s.

Irrespective of the contents quality, I think going retro cover is a good idea and may bring in a few new players who might want to get the original set too maybe?

Umn... I do not believe that for one second.

The parents will gladly shell out $120-$200 for one pair of sneakers and many kids will have several pairs.

$300 for a new Video Game Player and $45-$50 for a single game cartridge, not to mention all the side items and accessories, like the Guitar, a seat that vibrates, a wheel to drive and steer cars... etc.

$300-$500 for a phone!

How many of those same parents would rather spend a couple hundred for a game that will keep the kids in the house reading something and playing a game with several friends?
