But if they were in his house with the intention of robbing him, I can't work up a lot of sympathy. He's 64 and they are teens, one who is a wrestler. I'd be scared also. He has no criminal record, I'd be interested to see if they have one, and for what crimes. The guy obviously is a lunatic. But guys, he didn't do this out in the street, he did it inside his own house. Moral: Don't burglarize or break into the house of lunatics, or those that might be carrying loaded firearms. If they went and saw a movie that night instead of busting into someone's home, they would still be alive. As for him, he needs to carry a larger caliber weapon so he doesn't have to fire more shots. It's interesting that if he had killed both teens with one shot to the head, no one would care. That he was obviously a mental case is what is causing all the outrage here. This is not the actions of a rational adult, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's mentally all there. But if I find two teens in my home after hearing them break through a window, they better hope the police get to them before I do, I have a higher caliber weapon and hollow point ammo. I'd shoot them dead. Of course I'm one that thinks Bernie Goetz deserved a medal instead of jail time.Mike B.

Zenfinite wrote:Castle doctrine can't turn into "I can kill anybody in my house for any reason". That seems to be what happened here. They were kids, had no weapons of any sort, seemingly didn't even threaten (besides breaking into the house of course), or do anything besides walk down some stairs. What I see happening is you invite the person you want to murder over, shoot them in the chest, walk outside and kick in your own door, break a window, whatever. Then calmly walk back inside and call the cops. All statements herein are my own opinion. Maybe I see things differently. I own a gun. I'd have no problem shooting a burglar in the chest if they, I dunno, did something threatening. I highly doubt I'd shoot a 17 year old girl in the chest then one under the chin to finish the job. Does she have a gun? Yeah, OK then. Do they see my gun and turn and run outta my house? Just as good. This whole thing stinks and to say "fuck em" when two people are dead like that, I dunno man. I just don't know.Zen

The report I read is that he waited a day and then asked his neighbor to contact the police. I've seen the report about telling his neighbor, then other reports which contradict it. That's the rule these days when we can easily read different sources; in the old days we'd read maybe only one source, which would seem authoritative. Now the cracks show. The most puzzling detail is about the previous burglaries. He was robbed six times within a couple of years, all without telling the police. The seventh time was in October, when he claimed to police that $9,200 in cash & gold coins were taken. If someone is burglarized on multiple occasions within a short span, why leave $9,200 lying around for the thieves to find next?
Badmike wrote:Because it's his stuff? If I get burglarized I'm not going to suddenly give all my stuff away so when the burglars come again I can rest safely knowing there is nothing left of mine to steal. Maybe the guy just had cash and gold coins lying around, that's his right, it's his property in his house. I'm not required by law to place all valuables under lock and key in case a burglar breaks in.

Did any of the prior break-ins actually happen? He's already demonstrated unreasonable actions, so why give his stories any credence at all? By the time the cops arrived, he had cleared away the glass from the broken window & patched it with cardboard, thus destroying the evidence of the supposed Thanksgiving break-in. Did those kids really invade his house, or is it just one more lie to cover his actions?
