Tim asked for a moment of silence for Dragon at the beginning of the collectibles auction, so I guess that expresses his feelings.  Some of us talked with him at the Acaeum dinner about how important we thought Dragon was to the early hobby.

Was there any OD&D or AD&D 1e played at all (I guess some was sold or auctioned off . . . ?)?

I can't find any OD&D events, but a quick search of the pre-reg spread sheet shows about 2 dozen 1E games (4 of those were Rob Kuntz's) were officially scheduled. (1E games were the first thing I searched for when they released the event listing!) Plus there were pickup games like "Bad Mike vs. Killer Shrew."

What was the general feeling re: the "4e" D&D coming out?

I'd say the dominant reaction was "annoyance."  WOTC has basically being lying to the fans for a year about 4E -- even at WOTC's own convention (D&D Experience, in February), they were denying that 4E was coming soon.

Pretty much all the 3E kids I talked to admitted they'll buy the 4E books (because they're all big D&D fans -- that's why they're at Gen Con), but a lot of them worried that their less-committed friends back home won't want to bother.  Most of them also said they wouldn't bother buying any new D&D or D20 books between now and 4E, which I imagine must have really annoyed the dealers at the convention.

Mark had a great Gencon...the night before he went to the Acaeum dinner with us and sat next to Tim, who regaled him with tales for the entire dinner, then bought his staff the next night....and got Tim's fishing hat thrown in with the deal!  What a great weekend for him.

And yes, Bill, you were good not to come between your DM and his desire...could lead to VERY messy character death...!
