Well we have two ski hills opening this weekend, earliest opening in Canada's history I am told

So much for the global warming nonsense.

BTW -6 degrees C here in Calgary this morning, crisp and cool

Games can get you through times of no money but money can not get you through times of no games!!

I would have thought Calgary had early openings. I remember on Sept 25th of Canada's 125 I took a flight to Vancouver stopping in Calgary. We had to walk outside from the airport to the plane and there was a blizzard going on.

I have lived here for around 12 years now and I remember one year it snowed every month (July and August included). It never stuck though :lol:

I have been golfing in September when it snowed, rained and the sun came out and got warm (relatively anyway) all in the same game

. It really is a weird area of the country.

I think they will be found innocent also. And they apparently don't have to be in jail during the appeal process. But this is disturbing that people in a country are so protective of their leaders and brain washed that they blindly follow government...Mussolini begins to make sense.

But this has to have roughly the effect the Nazis had on the brain drain in Germany pre-WWII. Who is going to want to give any sort of optimistic weather report? What if you call for a weekend of clear skies, a storm brews up, and it capsizes a boat on a lake that kills someone? You'll be charged with murder. Anyone with integrity in the sciences will leave Italy in droves, as they should. People with no integrity will be left manning the weather reports and geophysical data (why possibly get sued when you can just always predict the worst and never be called to account? Just predict a 9.0 Earthquake or a monsoon every day and stay safe.)

It's just sad that the country of great scientist throughout history like Galileo, who was forced to recant by the church, has learned nothing in 400 years.

Certainly whenever I have visited my relatives in Canada - you can never predict the weather. People are reliably cool though

Arapahoe Basin (in Colorado) has been open for a week now. But to be fair, one of their calling cards is to try for the first to open, last to close in North America, they only have one trail right now, filled with everyone in Colorado who skis, so not exactly the greatest experience yet.

Since u guys are talking snow, I could use some pointers.

I'm taking the family to Vermont in December for a skiing trip. Our first as a family. Rented a cabin close to Stowe (not surprisingly, the place is called Stowe Cabins in the Woods...go figure :roll:

). Will arrive and leave from Burlington. Rented a minivan.

1. Should I book ski classes now or wait to get there? I know equipment is available for rent there.
2. Any advice for newbies? Remember: I'm from Puerto Rico. 70-90 degrees F the whole year.
3. Any Stowe frequenters here? Any other things we should see/do besides skiing? Going to Vermont so my foodie wife can visit Cabot Cheese, King Arthur Flour, and others (I agreed because Ben and Jerry's is 10 mins from cabin

).
4. Of course, the question: any gaming stores I should hit up there?

Once again, let me apologize to the British NFL fans for the stinker of a game we sent you again this year. I wish we could have sent you the Giants vs Cowboys, or Bears vs Panthers, which both went down to the wire, but it was not to be, sorry.

If you are taking the whole family I would recomend a private instructor. They are not much more than the group lessons when you have a whole family taking lessons on the same day. Book that before you leave if you can and take the lessons before you hit the slopes.

From what I've seen thus far just NW of Baltimore:

Was watching the first line of showers coming in yesterday afternoon. They seemed stuck on the east side of the Chesapeake for hours before they finally broke across.

I can see a small part of a major road (2-lane each direction, not an Interstate) from my house, and traffic looks about the same as any other day at this time. This despite the fact so many businesses and government services are shut down. Have no clue where these people are going. The fact that I can see that far is a testament to the volume of rain. I've seen worse downpours from summer T-storms. Granted, there is a vast difference between a brief heavy downpour and a more moderate rain over a long period than we are experiencing now.

I've also seen worse winds, but again, there's a diff between brief storms and sustained winds.

That's going to be the telling factor before it's all over. Sustained wind and rain versus stronger brief spells of weather.

Looked at the website of the area's major power company moments ago. Over 1.25 mil customers in the area. Currently 29,000 without power; 13,000 have had power restored.

Just the beginning. We'll see how this plays out.

Roads are closed here in Delaware, but so far it is just a middling rain storm with some wind. Where I live is supposed to be hit with the center of the storm sometime tonight. Just hoping the power doesn't go.

As a distraction from the storm up north, I thought I'd show you the beginning of my "Starlog" magazine collection.

Issue # 6 from June 1977
Issue # 15 from Aug 1978

Number 6 has good stuff about Space:1999, a show I simultaneously loved and hated.

Number 15 contains the Twilight Zone episode guide I haven't seen since I was in Middle School.

I read these very issues religiously before I discovered D&D.

They're not worth s lot of money, but as fellow collectors I thought you could appreciate their sentimental value.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by Sandy.

I ski once or twice a year, and I rarely fall down and enjoy myself. I have one strange recommendation when it comes to skiing; learn without the poles. Skiing is done 99% with your feet, and the poles just get in the way at first. Take my advice and you'll likely learn much faster.

The other piece of advice is to wear ski-bibbs. These waterproof overalls can be rented at any good ski place, or you can buy them ahead of time. If you are learning, you will fall a lot. If you fall and you are just wearing jeans or cloth, you'll get soaking wet in no time and be miserable. The same applies to gloves. If they are made of gore-tex, your fingers should stay much warmer and drier. Cloth gloves offer no protection at all once they get wet.

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.
