Personally, I'd rather lick a piece of pavement than eat a mass produced (Krispy Kreme or Dunkin) doughnut.  The best doughnuts are made in the local mom and pops by asians. I have a simply test, if I walk into a mom and pop doughnut shop and dont see a friendly asian face, I walk straight out.  All the best local stores are owned by Vietnamese and Koreans and they have the best doughnuts I've ever eaten...light and chewy, not too sweet.....

I used to believe the same but not anymore.  Pretty much all of the donut stores within a short distance from my house have gone downhill.  All still run by Asian families....but they must be cutting corners to save a bit of money.  The last time I picked up some donuts they were waaay too greasy and it was obvious the grease hadnt been changed out for quite awhile.  The sausage rolls werent as good as usual either...probably using a cheaper brand.

That is the great thing about Krispy Kreme....no matter which store you go to at what time of day you will always get the exact same product.  At least that is my experience.  Shipley donuts are really good too and they arent run by Asians.  Dont much care for Dunkin Donuts, but they seem to be doing something right.

I watched a show on the Travel channel or Food network a bit ago and they listed the top ten donut shops in the U.S.  Now I really want to take a road trip and check them all out.

Chocolate Creme comes eleven to a pack.  Caramel comes nine to pack.  $3.39 at both Targets that I checked.  The packages were sitting quietly on the topmost shelf where no one will look for them.     If I were the Pepperidge Farms marketing department, I would have designed something to draw attention to them.

I've heard Dunkin Donuts have decent coffee, but I don't know.

My wife works there as a part time sort of thing just to have something else to do that isn't her standard job, and the coffee is OK. It is better than Tim Horton's or Starbucks (not much is not, though, since I find both of those places to be utter crap in the coffee department) but the hot chocolate is better -- the white chocolate that is. I've yet to find a cafe, restaurant, or anything else that makes coffee well -- I'll just keep making it at home and taking it with me wherever I need to go. However, they make some good blueberry (I like most things blueberry) doughnuts but they can be hard to find.

Krispy Kreme is still around somewhere? Wow.

Well I was a bit disappointed when I went to my local Target store earlier today.  No Tim Tams to be found.  I dunno which store you went to JG but I was thinking that maybe only the Super Targets got them.  So tomorrow I will probably head over to another store that is a bit further from me to see if I can get a hold of some.  If I cant find any there I am going to be super pissed.

Sorry, should have mentioned, I think they are only at the Super-Targets (the one with the grocery stores) and not the "regular" Target stores.  If you can't find any I can buy you a few packages, they didn't seem to be flying out of there. I plan to clean the shelves off before March, anyway.

Not to worry though....our great-grandkids won't be born soon long enough to eat Krispy Kremes.  That franchise is about three whiskers away from going flat out of business.  They barely survived the "no carb" diet trend of the early decade, this economic slump should put the stake in the heart.

Krispy Kreme has fallen on hard times....mainly because of rapid expansion and doing so at the aforementioned worst possible time.  But I dont see them going away any time soon.  I speculate they will probably end up like Boston Market has.  They opened up tons of new locations in the late 90's, expanded too quickly, went bankrupt, and were bought by another company (McDonalds I think).  After closing numerous stores they ended up selling to another company and now they are doing alright.

The fact that you can get Krispy Kremes in every 7-11 in Texas and also in several grocery store chains makes it almost pointless to go into a Krispy Kreme store anymore.  The only thing is the best time to eat one is right after they are made and you can only get them hot in their bakeries.
