Indeed. Although I suspect a number of people quietly had it in their sights (and were hoping they were the only one!!)  :D

There was another chess set that came out from TSR a few years later (maybe early 1990s??) if I recall (*and it us generally cheaper).

The pewter chess set was an employee item and is quite rare.  I have one that was from the then VP of marketing (via a third party transaction) and one that I think was from the sculptor.  FYI, the sculptor has never been Id'd to my knowledge but the woman I bought it from was from that area and was a working artist when these were made.   If I can find a receipt or the box from her, I will post her name here and it might jog one of the former TSR types memory.  When the second set (artist owned) arrived, I tried to get more info from her and she was non responsive.   She moved to the West Coast from Wisconsin and does expensive cat themed giftware, wallpaper and that sort of thing now.

No way to know if the price is realistic until the reserve is met.  I would not sell one for an opening bid of $1,000, or even for 50% more than that.  I have two sons and we all play chess.  Were one to drop inexpensively, or via trade, I would gladly buy a third one.  Probably not at a grand though, so this one will likely go elsewhere.

Good luck to any of you who pursue it.  Other than the Pewter chalice... this is one of the very hard to find items that is actually high quality.

Also, while I am at it, I may as well put what I know about the chalice(s) on the record.  Although there once seemed to be consensus that at least five or six of these were around (via culling owners names from Acaeum posts!)....  it turns out there are far fewer.  The one I have was sent to me in a box with several mailing labels corresponding to the former owners on record.  So at least four of the different chalices are all actually the same one that got passed from collection to collection.  When I have time, I will post the ownership history as I understand it for the permanent record.

When the posters went up for sale, it was discovered there were only 2 sets... and Gail was going to keep a set... so they went high... only pristine sets owned by Gary.... they went so high, Gail opted to let the second set go to the next highest bidder for the same price... money talks :)

Well, this is only Dragon #1 found in Gary's Collection (verified), at least in the 2 pallets of stuff the Collector's Trove picked up from Gail (unless Gail is with holding and not telling). So owning the only Dragon #1 in Gary's collection has it's price.

I was looking at $1000~$1200 at least on this item, looks like it's gone beyond my guess... and I was about to put $1500 out there next, but at $2000+, I just don't think it'll wind up in my collection. If it did, it would never be in the NTRPGCon raffle !

And yet the description says:

"This is one of the many comp copies given to Gary as the president of the company and for his lifetime subscription to TSR product as the company founder. From his personal collection!"

I have trouble reconciling Doug's statement and Paul's known close-to-the-vest descriptions that usually do not mention how many (or how many cases) are to be offered later. :/

That line refers to many comp copies of EVERYTHING Gary has received ... ie: he gets comp copies of many items and sometime multiple of the same item.

My (verified) note means I called/spoke/emailed with Paul to confirm that it is the only copy... I don't go all out on an auction without knowing...

So in this case, the "many comp copies" is his usual "cover my ass line" since most of Gary's collection consists of "comp copies" of everything, and many times there are multiple ones at that.

You didn't see me bidding high on the Strategic Reviews ... :) ... or at least not the ones up for auction at this time

Thank God cause I thought it might be you, since it was the only Dragon #1.  From a purely collectible viewpoint I don't think it's worth half that, even with Gary's sig (which it doesn't have).  But from a "I've got the only Dragon #1 in Gary's collection" viewpoint, I guess you could justify maybe two grand (?) at most, and I'd still want Gary's sig on it.  Still got two days left so it'll be interesting to see where this goes!
