Actually I think it would be hilarious if the Seahawks win this game.  And if by some miracle of karmic justice they go all the way it would be utterly priceless.  Just imagine the look on Goodell's face as the league gets hoisted on its own pitard by the crazy playoff rules.

That would have incredible comedic value, true, plus watching Jerry have to smile and enjoy hosting, say, the Seahawks vs Patriots SB in what would could easily be a 76-3 debacle.  This is not a team constructed to do anything but be beaten like an old rug....for God's sake, they won ONE more game than the Cowboys, in a much worse division.

The Buccs and Giants (as much as I hate them) got totally screwed.  As much as I point out to my Giants fan friends that the Cowboys knocked the Giant out of the playoffs (due to that head scratching win weeks ago) they still deserved a chance to play in the playoffs instead of the sad-sack Seahawks.

If they insist on having sub-.500 teams have a chance at the playoffs, at least make it impossible to host playoff games.

On my way home from a gaming session on Sunday I stopped at my local Subway to get dinner.  Some 18 year old male (lets call him dumbass) with big earrings and a beard made a sandwich wrong and his co-worker politely corrected him.

Dumbass went ballistic calling his co-worker a punk and other assorted curse words.  He threw the register on the floor and acted like he was going to punch the male co-worker.  A female coworker that ran out from behind the counter said "just leave" and dumbass ran around the counter screaming "cunt" and other words at her.  As he went by me on his way to her, I punched him.  Knocked him down hard but did not knock him out.  He got up (nose and lips bleeding pretty good) called me a punk and talked about my punch being a "sucker" punch (technically I agree it was a sucker punch but I do not care) and doing the "I'm going to swing on you dance."

I stood my ground and told the other co-worker to call the police.  Dumbass said a few other words to me and grabbed his coat and headed out the door.  He was still going ballistic and threw the chip display down and tried to slam the door shut on his way out.  However, the door has those pistons on it and it simply shut nice and gently and I laughed.  This pissed him off (he's now outside the resturant) so much that he punched the glass window super hard.  Hurt his hand but did not burst the glass.  He left.  I waited for the police.  They took my statement.  I asked the cop if I was in any trouble for hitting him.  The cop said, "did you think he was going to assult the female."  I said yes. He said no.  My hand hurts a little.  Lots of excitment.

Sandwich, drink, and chips from the floor (still in bag) were free!!!!

Under UK law, aren't you required to try to retreat from an aggressor?

I recall an early case in American law where a man shot another man who was threatening him with a weapon.

The precedent under English Common Law was that he should have tried to retreat from his assailant.  He had a responsibility to retreat rather than meet force with force.

The case established that an American has the right to stand his ground and fight back.

I wonder if there is a similar news item from Britain that might bear on this topic....?

Seriously?  If that is true it is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.  Lets say you get into a fight with some jackass that's been drinking a bit too much.  Maybe he tried to fondle your wife or something and you called him an asshole, so he threw a punch at you.  Unless the dirtbag has a weapon or alot of friends, who in their right mind runs away?  I would instinctively try to grab the prick around the neck and slam him to the ground, kick him in the nuts or punch him square in the nose.  So a few minutes later, a cop shows up and starts asking questions.  Is the first question he asks seriously going to be "Were you retreating from him at the time you kicked his ass?"

What if youre at the edge of a pier and you have your back to the water?  What then?  Do you ask the guy coming at you if its ok to switch places so you can retreat from him and not fall off the edge?

You're first mistake was eating at Subway.  C'mon, dont they have a Jersey Mike's or a Quiznos nearby that you can go to instead?

Second....you apparently have a distaste for people with beards and guys that wear earrings.  Not all people with beards are idiots.  Some of the smartest people I know have beards.  But you are right about one thing....none of them can make sandwiches.  You should see Badmike's sandwiches.  They are always falling over and he puts mayo with corned beef.  Everyone knows mustard is the only condiment allowed on corned beef.

I would imagine that both the existing relevant statutes and the body of case law relating to assault alone would be extremely voluminous.  Particular examples from case law would also be very context specific (i.e. do you believe that you are under threat, do you reasonably believe that another person is at risk, do you believe that they intend to injure someone else, is anyone else likely to get hurt, is the assailant brandishing a weapon, are you, how much force do you intend to use, how much did you use, etc etc…).  I would imagine that the same is true in the US or any country with well developed legal systems.  I am not sure that a news clipping will help you with a definite answer.

This is true.  I have a beard (or about four weeks of straggly growth) and I really cannot make a good sandwich.
