darn, I was hoping to get this.....been trying to get my hands on this for a while..but out of my range..I went up to a max of $200...oh well next time

We did an informal poll here a couple of years ago on ownership of 5th vs. 4th print whiteys, and IIRC, it seemed the 5th was less frequently owned than the 4th. Still, it seems the 4th print sets tend to go for more than the 5ths. We'll see on this one. A really minty 4th went recently for under $200, I believe, to harami.

That was me (who snagged it, $208.50). At the age of 43, been waiting for and wanting my first white box for a long time, and really wanted a 5th printing. The extras were icing on the cake because I don't have those either.

I've carted my ancient Traveller, Metagaming and Cthulhu stuff around for years, but never managed to get a D&D white box. Now my collection is complete (at least, that's what I'm telling the wife tonight when I have to explain what I did with a good chunk of my tax refund).

Congratulations on the win. Looks like a real nice set. You will have to get the wife to let you pick up a copy of Greyhawk and Gods, Demi-gods, and Heroes to round out the collection.

(I think that was also back in the days when we had a "fourth minus"printing that turned out not exist or something like that.)

Agreed.

On the other hand, I've had 3 or 4 of each printing, and the 5ths almost all had box damage for some reason, like substantial dishing or bowing out of the sides, whereas the 4ths almost all have had pretty good boxes. If that's the case in general, a really minty 5th (which I've never had) could be very hard to find.

That'd be great. My first (and only) white box set is a really minty 5th printing. One of the few pieces I saved for myself from the collection I pieced off early last year.

Ahh, and you know, I just moved recently, and am busy putting the finishing touches on my D&D room. One of the reasons I got the place I ended up with was the addition of a 10' x 13' loft, it should be just the right size for my group's new home. When I get all the banners and stuff all hung up, I'll be sure and post a few pics. It sure won't be Strat's caliber of gaming love (but who's is??) but I think it'll work well for me, and my collection.

Huh, interesting stuff. I looked at the boxes today, and they seem pretty much identical construction-wise...so why would the 5ths be damaged more?

Theory: The final three supplements came out in 1976, after the 5th was released. More supplements in the box = more box damage, on average, in the long run.

In support of that theory, you often do in fact see the 5th auctioned with at least a couple of supplements.

If anyone is interested in this, it might be worthwhile to ask a few followup questions. Such as to get a picture of the staining on the back of the rules which isn't pictured and about the discolouration (staining?) on the top and bottom edge (on the right) of the map and along the top of that one seem.

Yep, the 5th I just got also included supps II, III and V, but I'm pretty pleased with the condition of the box itself. The creasing was of the typical "stored in closet underneath heavy thing for years" type of thing.

I remember that 4th print. It looked like it was in really great shape. I've been looking for a minty 4th for a long time, but missed that one since it wasn't listed under RPGs. Argh.
