The cigarette butt was a real downer for me too. Went from, OMG, I love that... to... ouch.

Such a lovely landscape in the prelim!

To me it's like walking on a beach that would be beautiful and pristine if a bunch of clods didn't litter it with cigarette butts. Yuck! Smokers don't have to be litterbugs, it's just a shame that some obviously are.

Some really nice pencil pieces there.
From an artists standpoint it is really interesting
to view his concept work and how he plays around
with composition before he settles on a final look.

You have quite a few concept pencil pieces from this work, I have the particular Forgotten Realms novel the artwork was commissioned for in 1993. He used that piece above, its just reversed in the scan, the lettering is back the front.

It was probably used for other works too?

Yeah, TSR re-used as much art as they could it seems! Honestly though, they produced so much stuff that it's sometimes hard to notice it.

Nice! I was trying to remember where I had seen it before other than that novel.
It was obviously commissioned originally for the book, as the story revolves around the hero
obtaining the magical pipes to face and defeat the
Shadow King in his tomb.

I have always liked that particular piece.

Not a fan of the new WOTC art at all but these covers are all really cool modern pieces. Top 2 are Cavotta, bottom is Adam Rex - Got that one from a local art collector (with the REAL collection)

Something a lot of people don't know is that reference models were designed and used as props for the oils. An artist generally doesn't just pull it out of his ass so to speak. When they do that, go completely from their minds, you tend to see more anatomical problems with a piece (like that flawed Easley I pointed out some pages ago). Very few of these objects remain, VERY FEW. Less so as far as 3 dimensional items specifically designed at TSR by and for a TSR product.
