i will still be coming over regardless of whether GenCon is on or not. if not, we just pile to Martin's and have a good old weekend sesh playing the "new" tegel manor and enjoying the great company that will be there.

Yes, the Indy show should be fine for years and years. I wouldn't be surprised if GenLon LLC really means "GenCon Indy-Only LLC" for at least a couple of years ... they need to decide if doing a lot of other not-very-profitable shows every year is what they want to be doing.

As far as any legal stuff goes, it's important to note that those two Ls stand for "limited liability." The lawyers will have to sort it all out, but the GenCon folks will be protected from some of the worst of it.

So what's wrong with trying to make a buck and at the same time bringing the greatest gaming convention to the four corners of the earth?  Maybe Adkinson isnt the best businessman on the planet or maybe there was a significant difference between running a company like Wizards of the Coast and running Gen Con.  People make mistakes...even gamer geeks like Adkinson.  Getting into bed with an idiot like Lucas was not a terribly bright idea.  But in all fairness, when he got the rights to run the convention built around the Star Wars franchise I can only imagine the fanboy giddiness that he must have felt.

I think a lot of what makes "Gen con" THE convention is  being based in the heartland of America. I think he just tried to spread himself a little too thin.  And I agree with your comments, but then again that was the problem:  Adkinson probably let the fanboy in him over-rule the logic and maybe made a deal without thinking logistics, profit, whatever..."yeh, sure, I get to team up with George Lucas, alright, give me the pen to sign the contract!!!"

John's make-out session with Richard Hatch was a bit embarrasing, especially when he offered to swap underwear with him...blech.

My favorite moments were twofold:  One, when I finally got to meet Gary Gygax, Frank Mentzer, and Tim Kask.  Especially Tim cause as I was talking to him I had to make myself remember that this was the guy who put together one of my favorite runs of Dragon magazine back in the day, and there he was just as enthusiatic and friendly as anyone could ever be.  There were so many questions I wanted to ask him but literally the man just talked and talked so much you were in awe and couldn't get a word in, which was cool!  And Frank was a blast also, very professional yet had time for all of us Acaeum geeks and even gave us several shout outs when he was auctioning stuff (since Acaeum members bought about 90% of the best stuff no wonder....!).

The second best was actually meeting Acaeum members that I had talked to for years yet never met in person: Killjoy, Prufrock, Grodog, NetRodent, Burntwire Bros, Blackmoor, Contrarian, Stratochamp.  The best part was not one asshat in the bunch, everyone was just incredibly nice, even more than you would imagine... it was almost like it was too good to be true since you figure out of the bunch that at least one would be a human turd, but nope.  I mean I've never felt more at ease with a group of people, it's like we all met and then boom we were digging through used gaming goodies or talking about auction stuff like we had known each other for years, which I suppose we had when you think about it.

Yeh Al, Tom is on my short list too.  I have to find something cool to bring him to sign!

At least I wasnt nearly as annoying as the guy in front of me that spent ten minutes talking about how much he loved the new Battlestar Galactica and if there was any way that Mr. Hatch could maybe help him land a bit part on the show so he could meet Katee Sackhoff.

Speaking of t-shirts....since you are planning on having some Acaeum t-shirts made why don't you get Tom, Tim, Frank and some of the other guys to sign your shirt?  Hell, you can make one for them as well.  And you can have an extra one made with the words "Human Turd" on the breast so if cougarrinard ever joins The Acaeum you can send it to him.
