The Japan situation was another complex issue where Franklin D. Roosevelt in July of 1941 made the decision to cut off 80% of the oil supply to Japan as a message that Japanese expansion was not acceptable.
This immediately crushed their economy so it was very easy for the Japanese leadership to demonize the United States.
This is no defense of the brutal tactics used by the Japanese during the war but from their soldiers point of view most of the time they were hiding in holes in the ground waiting for artillery to rain down on them or for flamethrowers to burn them out. To the average Japanese soldier their hatred towards all things American must have been immense.
Japanese POW camps were no picnics and Canadians are reminded every Remembrance Day about how Canadian troops suffered at the hands of their Japanese captors.

The problem is that the Japanese Empire was torturing and murdering people long before 1941.  Jusk ask the Chinese about the Japanese soldiers and their treatment of thier captives and civilians.

Far as I can tell, that was no theory...

After the war, Stalin had ~3 times as many of his own people killed as Hitler had Jews killed. There are knowledgable estimates that say that some 20,000,000 Russians were killed at Stalin's behest. That part of history seems to have been forgotten sometimes.

Yes, the biggest culprit was the militant faction of the Japanese Diet.

They imposed a loyalty test on the members of their parliament declaring anybody a traitor if they opposed an attack on China.

Many of the Japanese politicians/businessmen were looking for resources that were not available in Japan plus the creation of a buffer between themselves and the USSR.

It was sold to the Japanese people and military as a "holy war" to protect Japan which led to some incredible fanaticism.

Japan did not declare war since that would have invoked international treaties and cut off the supply of materials to them that they were buying from other countries.

What a waste of lives and materials. Of course China had been at war with various internal and external groups and countries almost continuously for over two thousand years at that point.

Hi,

I see WWII history is also taught differently outside the UK.

We were taught that the war finished in 1945, and that this was prior to Stalins Purges.

Obviously, you may have been taught differently.

And recent investigation would indicate that estimated USSR losses within postwar borders stands at 26.6 million  between 1939 and 1945.

Cheers,
Malc

I wasn't including the post May 1945 Russian stuff with WWII. Just commenting on how nasty the Russians have been since that time. Reagan had it right calling them the Evil Empire.

Of course the leaders of countries make the ultimate decision about what direction to project their power and how they will do so. For the average citizen, even in a democracy, there is very little that they can do to influence events.

Of course in the modern era the US has become famous internationally for projecting their power through surrogates. Propping up dictators and thugs with money and weapons and dumping them when they are no longer convenient.
- Augusto Pinochet in Chile
- Contras in Central America
- Noriega in Panama
- Suharto in Indonesia with the resulting massacres in East Timor
- Marcos in the Philippines
- Saddam Hussein in his fight against Iran
- The Shah of Iran after the Mossadegh government nationalized the oil reserves
plus others...

What I am trying to say is that on a national level the concepts of good and evil is meaningless. It is merely a marketing tool used to direct the sentiments of the citizenry. Countries spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing to create a "brand" for their policies. Even the military recognizes the effectiveness of these techniques and has psychological warfare units working on "marketing campaigns" and ways to sell a turd as a chocolate bar.

In short, very short, I think we Americans are sick and tired of bailing out he world with the cost of thousands of soldiers lives. I'd much rather be percieved as "projecting" than have to dig out the rest of worlds major wars.

I hate to debunk your history, but the Russians were "good" in WWII. They were on the side of the Allies (tho they did agree not to enter WWII at first, much like the USA).

So this kind of blows your theory.

Technically the Soviets werent on the side of the allies until June, 22nd of 1941 when Hitler decided to invade Russia even though they had signed a non-aggression pact back in August of 1939.  And even then, they really werent on our side.  They were fighting for their lives against superior German forces and were pretty much on their own.  The Soviets were saved by numerous German blunders during the siege of Stalingrad and the battle of Kursk, the surrender of Italy, and the Normandy invasion.  Stalin was a paranoid freak who was just as bad, if not worse, than Adolf Hitler.

The main reason that the Soviet Union paid such a high price during WWII was because Stalin killed the majority of his red army commanders because just like Hitler, he didnt trust them.  Unlike Hitler, Stalin made no attempt to fortify his border with the countries to his west.  He allowed Hitlers forces to invade and pretty much destroy Poland while believing that Hitler would keep to his part of the treaty.  Even when his own intelligence officers told him that Germany was building up forces in Poland to begin an invasion of Russia, he didnt believe them.

The Russians werent "good".

Sorry to derail - the politics of this are so immense I just don't feel this is the right place to comment - however Mikes post about this airliner crashing SO deserves not to be buried.

Talk about good day at the office - I take my hat off to the pilot and crew of this aircraft. This was all over the UK news, and so it should be. Strange that a plane crash should be GOOD news! :D

But as whole, and specifically, in the modern era the U.S. clearly stands head and shoulders above the murderous nature of its enemies.

That pilot displayed some awesome skills and the plane not breaking up is a great indication that information gathered from past crashes is being used in the design of the latest planes.

Here are the lyrics in case you can't understand what he's saying.

Take a boat, take a plane
Go to London, go to Spain
Take a train from Amsterdam to Monaco
Take a loved one if you think
They enjoy things that stink
Cause everything is different over there

When you're in Belgium you can eat
A lot of mayonnaise with your frites
And no one will say hey that's too much mayonnaise
Enjoy a German sausage hall
Eat an Italian meatball
But I hope you don't want a Twinkie
Because they don't have Hostess Twinkies over there

Over there you'll never feel at ease
Cause there's not much soap and there's too much cheese
And everyone wears clogs and rides on trains
Over there they'll make you regret that you ever
Saved their asses in World War II
Don't make me go over there

Cause I enjoy my freedom here
And I enjoy light-colored beer
I like to take showers
And I like to brush my teeth every day
Twice a day

They say that there's a place in France
Where the naked ladies dance
You can find it if you ask around
And there's a hole there in the wall
Where the men can see it all
But the men don't care
Because they chew their underwear
And the underwear they chew costs a dollar ninety-two
And the men go around with their ding dongs hanging down

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

However, how many ppl have died from these rocket attacks in the last 6 months? 3 or 4?  Yet you claim this justifies killing 1100 people

And now Israel is acting like a grown man with a baseball bat attacking a 5 year old armed with a fork.

The cynical timing also points to how culpable they are - over Christmas, and before Obama gets sworn in.

I'm sorry, but the whole American/Israeli love affair is beyond me.

To use you own analogy, Israel is really acting like a grown man (with a family) using a baseball bat--while attacking a neighbor (who has a 5-year-old and uses him/her as a "shield") who has thrown 6000 "knives" over your common fence in three years, or about six per day.  AND, the neighbor calls the cops on YOU for complaining.
Maybe the "knives" don't hit anything or anyone all the time (thank heavens), but imagine living under those conditions if you live in range of the Hamas missiles.  If you can't, ask someone old enough to remember the London Blitz.

Yes--"the enemy of my enemy is my friend" fits here.  And, before I get "debunked", I should point out that in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980's the U.S. was on the side of Saddam Hussein, not Iran.  Maybe not with material items on the level of, say, the Cold War (we aided Iran prior to the Shah's overthrow), but we were giving support to Saddam against Khomeini, et al. at that time.
