OK. I didn't know where else to put this request, so, here it is. I'm getting married June 15th, and headed on my honeymoon to the UK, arriving in London on the 18th. I need some of my UK collecting brothers here to direct me towards things I HAVE to see while I am in country. Here is my itinerary.

London the 18th-24th
Glasgow the 24th-30th
Liverpool the 30th-2nd
Dublin the 2nd-5th
Home on the 5th

I have rented a car for the trip, so we'll be able to drive pretty much anywhere you recommend. The weird back-trip to Liverpool is because there was no good place to drop off the rental car in Scotland before the ferry to Ireland.

I think I will be OK with planning stuff inside the major cities (London, Glasgow, Dublin) unless there is something off the beaten path I have to go check out. What I'm looking for is more the historical stuff. Old churches, castles, burial sites, stuff like that. I've already got the obligatory Stonehenge, Hadrian's Wall, you know, the big stuff. What else should I go see??

Please, PM me ideas or post here, I'd like to really make this a great trip; my future wife is a little skeptical of my ability to plan a good trip from across an ocean, I'd like to prove her wrong. With your help, of course.

I've been wanting to see the U.K. for years now but funding just isnt there yet. Still I've been doing plenty of research when I get the urge to. If you are planning a trip to Stonehenge and you are interested in seeing some spectacular architecture, you might as well drive the extra 40 miles up to Bath. The drive is supposed to be gorgeous since it skirts the Cotswolds. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and boasts lots of Roman and Georgian architecture. And there are lots of galleries, museums, and theatres. And there is a huge concentration of Bed & Breakfasts in that area if you need a place to crash for a night.

I was in the UK in 2001 on business and due to my vicinity, saw Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey ruins. Amazing. Did London on a previous trip and saw many of the sights there.

I can pm you some suggestions over the next few days, and you should feel free to ask any questions at all (e.g. am happy to give recommendations on London Hotels and areas etc...). For now I would certainly second Kingofpain's recommendation of Bath. You might find Stonehenge disappointing as you can no longer actually touch the stones except on solstices (unless you park a few miles away and sneak in at night), and they can seem somehow small. But they are a sight to see. Nearby I recommend Avebury ring which is less dramatic but much more accessible:

A nice site near Edinburgh (not really that far away from Glasgow, eh Faro

), is Rosslyn Chapel. A friend of mine got married there, 'twas quite atmospheric - although best to check (with this and other sites) it isn't having restoration work done. Everything is getting spruced up for the Olympics. Oh, also, I think Loch Ness is worth a drive up to as well.

A more elaborate (and possibly pricey) suggestion is to nip off to Paris on the train from London. Eurostar only takes about two and a half hours - and there are tons of trains. You can even just go for a day.

Did the Occupy London people finally leave? I know that for awhile they were living in some of the tourist attractions there.

Tower of London seems like an appropriate place for them. Well, maybe not. Surely there must be some dank rat infested dungeons left in London they can feel at home in.

I would LOVE to see the Tower used as a prison again. Now that would be a cool place to be incarcerated.

That was what I was thinking. The Tower would be a bit too cool for the Occupy riff-raff. I know in New Jersey we used to have these public restrooms in parks built of cinderblocks which is more of what I was thinking would be appropriate Occupy housing.

Well, they are only 18" tall.

Congratulations!

A couple of decades ago friends of mine did a pub tour of Dublin for their honeymoon and had a great time. It sounded pretty great in the '80s, not sure how it would be today.

Well I did it and pulled the trigger on the Ogre Kickstarter at $150. I am such a sucker for nostalgia and wargames. But at $520,000 I guess I am not alone.

The best part is that I will totally not remember having done this come November and will be completely surprised when it arrives. It does look cool though.

One for those that think Janet "I am a Nazi at heart" Napolitano's face service of 'see something say something' is a good thing:

Walking along a back road to the martial arts school I attend with clothes in bag and a sword case. Shortly before getting there, a cop pulls up behind me and queries me on the contents of the sword case, as some pinheaded, brainwashed, brownshirt called in that someone might be carrying a shotgun... AS IF THEY'RE ILLEGAL!!!

For what it's worth, the cop was rather embarassed over the situation, and to his credit, was very non-confrontational. Must get a ton of these type of asinine calls.
