King, it's not just DFW folks who can't drive in the weather. People in my area who have lived here their entire lives have no clue either.

Yeah, but I'll bet the percentage of untrained drivers in the northeast and midwest states is much less than in the southern states. And I almost forgot....good to see you back on the forums Brian.

BC is correct. Believe me. I live in upstate NY, where there's plenty of snow and ice in the winter and you'd think the natives would know better. But no, every year at the first snowfall there's a slew of accidents. It's like some people completely forget how to drive in bad weather over the summer. :roll:

I think my favorite is the idiot in the SUV flying along past everybody at 50mph in a snowstorm. "WHEEE, I have 4wd, I can go as fast as I want, just like in the TV commercial!"

You sure can, genius--- but try and stop. Plenty of these tools wind up flipped over on the side of the road every winter.

Every winter I see SUV's in the ditch because the driver thinks that they can drive like it is summer conditions.

The idiots think that four wheel drive gives them some incredible kind of stopping power on ice. Mass, velocity and lack of friction soon teaches them otherwise. :twisted:

Keep it up guys, I'm feeling warmer at 20 degrees already!!!! I may get some tanning time in later on the back porch!!! We are very lucky we only had a small amount of precipitation with the cold, an inch or so of ice/snow would have shut down the city. As can be imagined the DFW area does not have the equipment necessary to make the roads safe to drive.

Note that Jason W also has a job where he works outside some of the time...good lord!

When we got hit with the snow before Christmas, we had 2000+ cars abandoned overnight in our town, the whole place was gridlocked and it wasnt unusual for people to get home at midnight having left work at 5pm... thankfully the snow came on Tuesday evening, so most people were home. Its around a foot deep now, so I've walked to get what we needee

My middle brother used to date a girl whose family was in Buffalo. He visited her parents with her several times, and still maintains the worst drivers he has ever seen are in Buffalo. He once saw a 30+ car pileup start from one simple fender bender as cars behind refused to slow down in the ice and snow and kept plowing into the original cars (and each other). He said it was like they would get penalized if they slowed down to below the speed limit.

I work at Costco and the week before Christmas I had a seven hour shift working in the lot gathering shopping carts. The temperature was a brutal -31 C. which is -24 F.
Layers are the key to surviving. Thermal base layer long sleeve shirt (like underarmour) similar leggings, fleece lined hoody and a thick winter coat along with a full face thermal balaclava, glove liners, winter gloves, base layer socks with a thermal sock over them and a pair of winter work boots rated to -70.

Expected forcast of snow between this morning and midnight: 6 - 14 inches.

Temps ranging from 18 - 24 degrees F

It took me 50 minutes to get into work this morning, when it should take me 15 - 20, since the expressways were at a crawl. They all took my sidestreets to get to work. Suprisingly there were no serious accidents on any of the major expressways this morning.

If I'm lucky, the boss will let us get out of work early today

I'd drive in a hurricane. Up here, we learn to drive carefully or we don't survive. I think we tend to learn early too, given the rurality (my word) of the area. My 8 year old sits on my lap and drives now. Illegal? Yep. Essential learning? Yep.
When I was in Syria back in '79, I saw 13 year olds driving semis, and driving WELL.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

Nice, sunny, if rather crisp and cold day here in Delaware.

We are unfortunately prone to black ice, a thin covering of ice over the tarmac that is almost invisible at night.

Years ago when I was working as a bouncer we would finish for the night at about 3 am. The drive back to my house was along a main road so it was cleared of snow right away but a certain section of the road was graded badly and one side slanted downward and ended in a ditch running alongside the road.

I'm driving home and suddenly the car ahead of me starts spinning out of control and slams into the ditch for no apparent reason. I slow down but hit the ice and suddenly I'm spinning too. It was one of the Mckenzie moments where you just have to fold your arms and say "No Point in steering now". Luckily I hit the ditch about 5 feet in front of the other car. Before I could do anything I see a car speeding down the highway and suddenly a state trooper is spinning in circles toward us. He slammed into the ditch about two feet in front of me.

A year later I was still working in the bar, and heard the black ice warning before I left from work. 3 AM, and I'm coming up tp the same stretch of road. I slow to a crawl, and much more slowly this time, spin across the road and end up in the ditch again.
