I don't think it will afftect the amount of buyers at all.. most of them aren't really aware of the new situation, most of em don't care. The duders will try new tactics to dud (both buyers and sellers) and people will leave and stay beacause of it. Ebay is still the big boy in town and that doesn't look to change in the short term...

beasterbrook wrote:I sometimes think what the big who-ha is all about. Ebay has changed their feedback policy to stop certain problems and in doing so new peoblems have arisen. Some sellers have "shit where they eat" so to speak, so they are now all paying for that.. Ebay has risen their fees and, for the most part, if you aren't already getting a 5 star rating you will be paying the higher fees.... thats just the way it is at the moment

Sellers will still be able to sell just the same with the "new" guidelines , just that some of the "power" has been removed from the seller with higher fees to be paid, and the sellers aren't liking it (hay I wouldn't either)...

Mike I have a couple of suggestions...

1) As an overseas buyer (a good one;) LOL ) I'm well aware of the costs of shipping to me and the time taken to get here, and I can understand both sides. Most of the problems I hear about are mostly to do with the buyers as Mike has said. As a CYA (Cover your Arse) guy  one thing I can suggest is that you could limit your sales to the US market and get international people get in contact with you to quote shipping, time taken etc. That way you can sus them out and sort out any trouble before it occus. You could add the people that you know are good overseas buyers to your execption list for bidders and go from there..

2) I agree with the tracking, its one complaint that I see about chargebacks that packages have gone overseas and besause of the way it is sent (ie the cheapest) there is no tracking and so they can do a charge back. I really don't have an issue with this, but as a "large" buyer I do like M-bags and I see no reason to not send them for me (I have never lost one yet). One way to get around the lost package syndrome is to not accept paypal... back in the old days paypal didn't even exist, I remember going to the bank and getting $$ and sending the little pile of $$ off in the mail.. maybe poeple should start doing it again... but only if you suspect that there may be a problem... there are also some ways that you can send paypal invoices that would limit your exposure as well... and maybe some other options...

3) Have a monthly list of the sale items that you have and post em here, DF, rec.games etc as in the old days or you can send out a weekly email like Aaron does.. I know I like this.. I don't have to scan through pages and pages of ebay I just have to scan through an email or post. It also willl reduce your ebay fees as well as there won't be any.

Brette:)

Just to note I will always ship to Acaeum members no matter where they are...and, as a whole, I will do what I can to ship overseas as some of my best customers are based in Australia, the UK, and yes, Italy. I was just pointing out that there are people now that think taking two minutes to fill out a customs slip is already an onerous process, they may just decide when they get their first or second bad rating from an overseas buyer because they package took two weeks to arrive (something the seller may have no control over) they may just eliminate the problem by eliminating the overseas buyer.....just a warning that this "power to the Buyer" may backfire on foreign buyers.

One thing I have started doing when I get international inquires onshippng prices is pointing out that due to customs procedures it could take up to four weeks to receive even with global priority mailing, hoping to alleviate a lot of the "Where is my item? You have stolen my money you filthy American pig!" emails that sometimes arrive.... 8O  Seems to be working though, probably something I should have done long ago.

The weekly sales list is too time consuming; I do have a mailing list feature on my ebay store account; I rotate the items featured on it every week or so to highlight new or popular items. The new featured item list is a good idea but I just don't think I have the time or inclination to implement it.

So how is the way buyers feedback is being treated on Ebay different than the way Amazon does it?

Big difference.

Buyers on Amazon get no feedback.** Everything is billed and credited instantly, so there's no real reason to reward someone for clicking their mouse twice. Nor can there be "slow payers" or "bad attitudes" or whatever ... again, it's all instant. If you don't have a credit card on file, ready to be billed in about .7-second, then you don't get to play.

What eBay is saying is that they still want buyers to be rewarded, but that they're also going to take away any possibility of buyers being penalized in any way. An eBay seller will have two choices: leave a positive or don't even bother leaving feedback.

Since there are different types of buyers using eBay — fast ones, slow ones; those with PayPal, those without; those with working brains, those without; those who are capable of following simple instructions, those who get joy out of complicating everything, etc., etc. — this will create a no-win situation for sellers who find themselves in any sort of disagreement with a buyer. One of the few tools left to sellers — the ability to leave non-positive feedback — is being taken away. It's a complete farce.

+++++

**Technically, they can ... but, in my experience, I've practically never seen it happen. I've bought a ton of stuff through Amazon resellers and received a positive comment exactly once. More importantly, any feedback as a buyer is not reflected on an Amazon seller's profile.

I would imagine that there is fewer chargebacks as well.. on paypal no need to prove delivery etc..???

Looks like there might be an organized seller revolt over the changes:

I'll definitely check out Trialpay and Alertpay. I'll be dropping Paypal in about a week or so, I think.

Wow, great article. Thanks for the link.

I've mostly laughed at those boycott efforts throughout the years, but I'm not laughing now. Seriously, eBay's recent announcements are so over-the-top stupid that I'm not going to blame any user for trying to strike a blow, either singly or as part of a group.

Or, as one woman says in the article (paraphrasing), "We just want eBay to listen."

That was a good read, though, no matter what ends up happening.

AuctionBytes has a very nice, user-friendly summary of the recent eBay announcements here:

http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y20 ... bu0208/s02

Actually, the whole site is worth checking out. They've been around for a while (and had a few name changes along the way), and they've been reporting on auction sites since the whole phenomenon really took off.

I'd classify the site as definitely "pro-seller." Not exclusively, by any means, but their general POV is from the seller's side.

If I were a power seller, I'd consider boycotting eBay. But, as it stands, I've tried to sell one whole thing (and did - just got my first positive feedback s a seller), so its relatively pointless for me... besides, eBay remains one of my best options for procuring certain difficult items, and, my best way to see what people like bclarkie and Badmike have to offer. :)

BTW I will be participating in the Ebay Boycott the week of the 18th.....no new listings/auctions and no buying, although my store will be open if anyone wants to buy.  I'll probably post a new thread a week from tonight to remind everyone, if you are a seller on ebay I would appreciate your support, Ebays attitude of "Boycott's have never worked before, it's just a bunch of talk from people who won't follow through, go fuck yourselves" in media statements has really pissed me off, frankly.  It may do nothing to change anything but I'll feel a lot better doing it!

How much you wanna bet ol' Cougarrinard doesn't participate in the boycott?  He might have to sell one of his houses if he did.

I'll do it, Mike. I've been meaning to get some gaming stuff posted, but hell with it; it can wait. And no buying either, as you say.

Be sure to post a reminder, though, if you wouldn't mind.

Color me signed up, I've got a bunch of stuff to sell, but I'll take a break for the rest of February to support the boycott, and won't be looking to buy anything either.

Same here, except I'll list a bunch of stuff this week in the store, and take next week off to concentrate on catching up on shipping and pricing some comics.   I really expect the EBay big wigs to downplay the effect, even if it is noticible, but it will warm my heart to know Ebay made much less from me that week.  Probably a symbolic gesture, but there are really very few ways for sellers to make their voices be heard, which is sad considering sellers for the most part pay the bills.  I'll probably make a posting to the classifieds on Sunday offering a nice sale to any Aceaum members if they purchase "off" ebay, I'll work out the details this week...

Thank you for the good consideration over the Fair Country, Mike. As a frequent buyer, on one side I am pleased that I can say what I think of a Coug-like seller (I wonder if eBay were thinking about him when they made the policy changes!) without having a retaliating feedback in return. On the other side, I have already seen in the past six months or so a huge amount of US-only auctions, and the chance that it will get worse is realistic.

I can understand this, because I remember when I started on eBay... for my first purchase I chose surface mail and was quite worried when the items didn't arrive after three months (and when they did, they were utterly crappy... but then, the seller was Tonya, and that taught me a good lesson).

What I've learned is that a foreign buyer purchasing in the US should account for an average 10-15 dollars in S&H, and something between 2-6 weeks for shipping, depending on the seller's knowledge with postal systems. The problem is that one learns this after several months of eBaying, and it's full of people who are ready to protest if the shipping cost exceeds 3 dollars and the item does not arrive in two days.

I guess the good buyers and the good sellers are not enough in number not to pay the price of the bad ones.

I'm in!  I won't be selling anything the week of the 18th.  I'm not optimistic anything will change, but I'm hoping it does. :)

I'm in, for what it's worth. The vast majority of sellers won't be and you can't really blame those who use eBay as their business, it's hard to ask a self-employed seller to strike, who loses most after all?

I'm sort of on enforced strike already. Last week was dire on eBay, just a couple of sales, way down on my normal activity. Anyone know if they have already started bumping small sellers down the search listings? Or is February some sort of cyclical dead spot?

Good news, even though I quit, I'm a power-seller again! I guess the eBay geniuses must have canned some other poor sod's account. Sorry about that, whoever you are, but it's just eBay being eBay, what do you expect? Can't wait to shut down my shop - they'll probably kick Mike off.

Another one to watch out for, I almost fell foul of it today. I'm ending listings in my shop on a daily basis as they come up for auto renewal. I noticed, in the nick of time, if you send these items to auction eBay charges a listing fee based on the previous fixed price of the item - even if you're listing everything at 99p. Or at least that's what the confirmation screen states, I don't know if the fees are adjusted once you actually go ahead and list. So you need to end the item and re-list from scratch to get the lower fee. Sneaky old eBay, screwing sellers at every turn.

It's all a bit sad really, I was enjoying eBay.
