Alan Rickman as the doctor - what a cool idea!

Hugh Laurie strikes me as an obvious choice.  Alan Rickman would be cool.

Costner crapfest you mean.  My favorite line from the movie was from Christian Slater when they catapulted Costner over the castle wall.  "Fuck me!"  Yeah....I'm sure they used F-bombs quite liberally back then.  

Alan Rickman is probably better known in the U.S. as Professor Snape from the Harry Potter movies.  He has played a lot of really great roles in other movies though.  His portrayal of the Sheriff in Robin Hood is probably the most memorable.

Forgot about HP, I'm not really into those and didnt think 'Love Actually' was suitable...

Kinda funny about the Harry Potter flicks.  I didnt start watching them until sometime last year.  Never read any of the books either.  I just figured they were kiddie movies and really had no interest.  Then my older brother, who has two young kids, told me that he had been watching them with his sons and really liked them.  So I picked the first one up and watched it and didnt find it to be all that bad.  The second and third films were even better (Azkaban is probably the best of the series IMO) and I also have enjoyed the rest of them.  I like them so much I am picking up the books now and starting to read them from the beginning to see just how much was left out of the films.

And I completely forgot to mention another great Alan Rickman performance:  Hans Gruber from Die Hard.  Not only can he pull off a pretty decent German accent but he also nailed the American accent when he was posing as the employee "Bill Clay" while trying to fool Bruce Willis.  But everyone knows you can't fool Bruce Willis.

Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie as the Doctor & Companion.  Doesn't matter who plays whom (or Who); either actor can be as serious or humorous as needed.

I just cannot see him as the Doctor, when I see him as Black Adder.

Did Tom Baker lose weight? Last time I saw him was in an Agatha Christie TV episode and he'd gotten pretty heavy.

Rickman would be a wonderful Doctor Who. Bring some talent and class to the series, but he can also do humor. I wouldn't have wanted to see Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor (but didn't he play him in a spoof version?) But he can do the goatee thing perfectly (Black Adder II). John Cleese would have been a fantastic Doctor.
