To the ears of a Westerner, the stupidest part is the law against hollow point bullets....?  What does that accomplish?

50 states with 50 different sets of gun laws.
That would be confusing to anybody.
We don't have a "gun culture" in most of Canada except for hunters and street gangs in the larger cities.
What we have is federal firearms laws so that everything is consistent from coast-to-coast.

Kind of wish we had that here so there is no confusion about what is lawful in one state versus another.  I enjoy travelling by car when we go on vacation and we will sometimes drive through 3 or 4 different states to get where we are going.  I used to carry a small caliber pistol with me just in case I ran into the "wrong sort" of people.  But I dont do that anymore because the law varies so much from state to state and I dont want to end up imprisoned because I didnt know the differences in state laws.  So instead of a pistol I take a 12 gauge shotgun.  Apparently that's no big deal.  

I do need to get a concealed handgun permit though.  New Mexico is one of those states that recognizes other states' concealment laws.  Which means that a Texas resident can lawfully conceal a handgun in New Mexico without penalty.

I dont really get this either.  A hollow point is designed to expand or break up on impact so it doesnt penetrate as far into a person, just like you said.  Although it does significantly more damage than a "normal" bullet, I still dont see why this is an issue in New Jersey.  I can understand teflon coated bullets or maybe even armor piercing bullets being unlawful but this law seems pretty silly.  And sending the guy to jail for 7 years is beyond incomprehensible to me.  From the story I read, it seems like the judge, jury, and his defense attorney are all idiots.  Some of the comments below the story are shocking to me.  Quite a few people siding against Mr. Aitken for being stupid.  But it seems that the majority of the posters are sympathetic.  This is my favorite quote of the bunch:

I guess there's no common ground anymore. In NJ, a guy gets 7 years for having LEGAL guns in his possession. In PA, a guy who is in possession of heroin, and then leaves his kid in the parking lot so he can drink and gamble in the middle of the night, gets 2 months. Then, in NJ, you read where people say, "They are illegal, period", but getting head from a calf or coming to NJ illegally from another country is overlooked. Just another reason not to live in NJ.
